I think it’s a cultural thing. Many Mexicans and Central American live in my neighborhood and a lot of their infant girls have pierced ears.

Also pierced ears aren’t permanent. Take out the rings and they grow shut.

My daughter was born in a jungle village in the SE Asia. They pierced her left ear put a big red star on her forehead and a bracelet of special flowers/weeds(?) on her right wrist..assured me that would protect her from getting sick.

Didn't seem to hurt so I had no problems and the ear long ago healed..
