Who else could it have been? Jindal and Paul Ryan have already done it, Rand Paul’s probably still too close to the rEVOLution for Republican leaders to be comfortable with him in a spot like this, and Chris Christie would just end up talking about how terrific Obama’s speech was. Half the reason party leaders are pushing amnesty, I’m convinced, is because Rubio’s that good in front of a mic and this issue gives him access to lots and lots of microphones. If, as McCain bluntly concedes, immigration reform is all about earning goodwill from Latino voters, then of course the party’s biggest Latino star gets this platform. And in case you’re hazy on who the target audience here is, Rubio will deliver his address in English and Spanish:
Marco Rubio is one of our partys most dynamic and inspiring leaders. He carries our partys banner of freedom, opportunity and prosperity in a way few others can. His familys story is a testament to the promise and greatness of America, said Speaker Boehner. Hell deliver a GOP address that speaks from the heart to the hopes and dreams of the middle class; to our partys commitment to life and liberty; and to the unlimited potential of America when government is limited and effective.
Marco Rubio embodies the optimism that lies at the heart of the Republican vision for America. On Tuesday, he will contrast the Republican approach to the challenges we face with President Obamas vision of an ever-bigger government and the higher taxes that would be needed to pay for it, said Senator McConnell. Marcos own experience as the child of immigrants has always informed his belief in limited government and free enterprise, which is why he has helped lead the fight against out-of-control spending and job-destroying tax hikes that continue to hold our economy back and stifle opportunity for millions. He was a natural choice to deliver the Republicans alternative to the administrations reliance on government and debt.
Im honored to have this opportunity to discuss how limited government and free enterprise have helped make my familys dreams come true in America, said Senator Rubio. Limited government and free enterprise are the very foundation of what makes America special and separates us from the world, particularly through our strong middle class. I look forward to laying out the Republican case of how our ideas can help people close the gap between their dreams and the opportunities to realize them.
Immigration will be mentioned in the speech, but an aide to Rubio tells CNN that that won’t be the focus. The focus, wisely, is on convincing middle-class voters more broadly that they’ll do better with the GOP’s limited government agenda. Rubio told Rush Limbaugh last week he’s confident that he (not necessarily the party, but he himself) can sell that idea. With America having just reelected the Sixteen Trillion Dollar Man, I’m pretty confident that no one can. Prove this eeyore wrong, Marco. Please.
Exit question: Between this and his influence over the fate of immigration reform, is Rubio the new de facto leader of the GOP?
In English or Spanish?
No.
Both.
So, apparently 2016 is his turn.
:-(
I cannot take Rubio's smaller government rhetoric seriously as long as he's out in front on comprehensive immigration reform.
The two policies are in no way compatible.
He is out in front on amnesty and he has plenty of Republican support to make it happen.
Rubio’s romance with Amnesty and Cantor’s romance with no child left behind can only denote that Conservatism Inc. or GOPe is dying or dead. Their only ideas are from 30 years ago and have failed. Bury them soon and let’s start on something new and relevant.
Conservatism, IMO, has just entered a decade or two in the wilderness. We are going to have to rebuild our own party and take the GOP out at the kneecaps in order to take this country back. And the sooner we all get onboard with that the better.
During that 2 decades the illegals will amnestied and this country is lost. It will only be recovered by a massive reset event such as total collapse of world markets, a civil war, or a man made epidemic to thin the heard and wake people up. We can only hope that whatever happens does on a world wide scale so we are not vulnerable from the outside while we reset.
He speaks bettert spanish than Jeb Bush, McCain is almost bound to be in his corner, and they can point to his 2012 Tea Party credentials.
Like it or not, he's all alone on the fast track.
Apparently, he speaks bettert spanish than I type English.
to hell with rubio, why couldn’t Ted Cruz give the response?
Rubio is proof the GOP is already throwing 2016 for the Dems. This Amnesty Liberal will be a disaster
IMO, Rubio is a stalking horse.
He’ll suck all the air out of the room from conservatives for the next couple of years, then gracefully step aside when his mentor, Jeb Bush, throws his hat into the ring.
We’ll see.
This could be the kiss of death for Rubio. In the past, the Repubs that give the response to SOTU are left in the mud. This isn’t some sort of launching pad as some seem to believe.
Cruz is my Senator, I love him so far. A lot can happen between now and 2016. Usually, people burn out if the peak too soon before the election. I would be surprised if Rand Paul, Rubio, Paul Ryan, Christie, and other usual suspects even last till 2016. It almost always turns out to be someone we aren't talking about right now.
