Japan says it scrambled its jets last night after two Russian fighter jets briefly entered its airspace near disputed territories and the northern island of Hokkaido.
Russia, which is currently holding military exercises around the disputed Kurile islands - or Northern Territories - denied any such intrusion took place.
The incident happened on what Japan's "Northern Territories Day", when rallies are traditionally held calling for the return of the disputed islands.
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe had told a rally he was determined to press ahead with negotiations with Russia for the return of the islands.

Why are Japan’s neighbors testing them like this? It was the Chinese earlier this week, now the Russians, and plus we’re back to the Russian denials of the 80’s. Or am I paranoid?
Because the US guarantees Japan’s security.

That, and both nations still have a deep hatred for the Japanese from WWII, understandably, but it just seemed peculiar that this is all happening in such a small timeframe.
Spot on! And the world see how far the US has fallen. Japan had better build up its' Defense Forces or they will lose.
oh, that’s easy:
1. Russia sees a once proud nation weakened by natural disaster, stagnant economics, and population drop.
2. Russia sees easy pickings
Russia is just doing what comes natural.

we see a Nation on the ropes, an economy in a downward spiral, energy shortages crippling industry and a politician on the hot seat - looking for some way to divert the population from troubles at home.
