A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.
Hundreds of residents in New Yorks Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.
The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the papers decision to make the information public.
This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this. This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should i hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!! said commenter Curtis Maenza.

Quite the uproar going on.
link didn’t work. Try this.
One of the questions asked is why would a paper do this.
The answer is simple -—intimidation.
Another sentence stated that this is what is done for sex offenders. This newspaper equates gun owners with sex offenders. In their minds one is as bad as the other.
Evidently this paper feels it can survive without the business given them by gun owners and Conservatives. They feel they can make it with the liberal trade.
Maybe they can liberals seem to have the momentum these days.
I haven’t really thought it through, bu my initial impression is, I don’t think I’d care. In fact, I might be inclined to apply for a permit just to have it published, i.e., “Don’t mess with this guy!”
What progressive "smarm".
A map of the safest houses in the area
A map of the safest houses in the area
The socialists might be doing a good job at stampeding the sheeple these days, but we still have the guns.
Molon labe!
If you are a criminal in need of a gun, now you know where to find one.
Just 12 days ago, Jimmie Hoffa Jr. told us we’re going to have a civil war, and you can’t really have a proper war without assault weapons.
Gun registration is a moot point today, in the era of data-mining.
If you ever bought a rifle mag or ammo with a credit card, they know what you have got. And me, and all of us.
A road map for criminals of where NOT to go:

All the people that work for this paper should have their address, phone number, stock holdings and such published. The first amendment people should have had their data published first, that is unless they publish with a quill pin.
So there is no doubt, I proudly fly my Gadsden flag every day in front of my home. No one in my neighborhood has complained to me or seems to care. Few of them own guns, some don’t but they know when the SHTF, they will be under the aegis of whatever protection I can provide.
One more point, with the exception of the doc who got his medical training paid for by joining the military, no one in eye sight of my home is a veteran, kind of annoys me but I go with the flow as long as that flow does not try to back up on me.
if there is ANY increase in home break-ins over the next month or so, and those homes just happen to NOT own a gun... I would sue that paper for giving the criminals a list of safe homes to hit
That is one reason I carry cash when I buy ammo. Never use a credit card for ammo these days. It’s probably been 20 years since I paid for ammo with a card, and that was most likely .22 or 12 gage bird shot.
One paper in Florida did this a few years ago with the Names and Addresses of licensed Concealed Carry people. Of course it is available from the state if you are so inclined. Try to get any ID of someone off their Driver’s License record and LOL with that though.
The only exception was for those who had requested confidentiality due to prior law enforcement experiance. Fortunately those did not get published.
The more I think about these activities, the more my blood boils.
A map of which homes can be defended by guns is also a map of which homes are defenseless. Thieves and rapists in the area applaud the newspaper's decision.
Stupid liberals inviting their obamaphone fellow voters to come burgle, rape and kill them.
Ha! Half my street is retired or active duty Army.
Just a WAG based on observation, my entire neighborhood is pretty much the same.
Well, living just outside Ft Bragg, NC helps the statistics.
Good. They should be criminally charged and prosecuted. I hope they get their a$$es sued off into closure.
If I was a non gun owner in these areas I’d be suing the paper, they just became an easy mark for criminals.
I can't tell you how bleeping tired I am of hearing this latest liberal buzz-word "conversation". There is no "conversation" with liberals; only propaganda. When this liberal rag of a paper can explain why it's ok for the Sidwell Friends to have 11 armed guards, but wrong for the great unwashed of America; then we can have a "conversation".
That's true for recent purchases -- but firearms are designed to be robust and withstand hard use. Pretty much everyone (except my dad!) who returned from WW2 came back with a Luger or K-98. My own state has required permits for pistol purchases since the 1960s, but the permits are still paper with multiple carbon copies. The amount of time and effort to track down everything would be astronomical. And guaranteed to be inaccurate -- the state can't even handle annual vehicle registration renewals without an incredibly high error rate.
Conversely, if you are a criminal and want to know where the safe places are, just go the other houses which are unprotected!
A va newspaper tried. One of the names on the list spied on the editor found him having an affair and sent the pics to his wife and competing newspapers. The list was taken down
Very wrong thing to do. They literally put peoples’ lives in jeopardy by doing that. Should be prosecuted. What about publishing all owners of gold coins?
Comments don’t come up. Of course. I sure hope they don’t mind when their reporters, editors and publisher’s names and addresses are published with equal gusto.
This shows the true philosophy of the “Great Unifier” political party. Seems like all these people do is find ways to divide this nation.
They will wait for an amnesty period, and then conduct a number of splashy “mini-wacos” against bitter clingers who have expressed the idea that they will resist rather than submit to confiscation.
That will be the tactic of choice, to cow the rest into submission, but instead of submission, it will trigger CW2, if they go that way.
An Orlando TV station did this. And folks looked online and found the station manager and others information from the property appraisers website and promptly posted as much private information as possible about them on the web.
It was only a day or so later their gun owner list then came down.
Simple and effective response:
As many permit holders as possible should go to each and very advertiser of the paper, stand in a conspicuous PUBLIC spot and tell each and every passerby, “I’ve got a gun...permit.”
PS: Imagine how many gun safes will be rigged to explode in the event of confiscation raids actually happening? They’ll need to send EOD along with every gun confiscation SWAT raid.
The odds of getting the bullets first are just too great. The occupational hazards of home invasion.
Publish/GoogleMap the names & addresses of the liberal creeps who work for that newspaper. Crooks can then assume that those homes are gun-free.
“What’s sauce for the goose........”
In that post there are two interesting replies:
This guy:
http://christopherfountain.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/sauce-for-the-goose/
posted the name, address phone numbers and other info on the publisher and the reporter.
I dont know who the guy is, but one would suspect hes one of the people displayed in this reckless release of data.

I almost feel sorry for the newspaper publisher.
That response made my day.
See #40.
or whole houses
Exactly. It is the criminal's equivalent of a "Do not call" list for home invasions.
...the editor should have all his (or her) information made public...address, phone number, email,.....
The Democrat IL Attorney General last year wanted the names of Illinois gun owners published but was overruled by the Illinois Senate. Democrat Gov Quinn reluctantly signed the bill into law.
Illinois Governor Signs Bill Banning Release of Firearm Owners Names
Published July 03, 2011
Associated Press
CHICAGO — Gov. Pat Quinn on Saturday signed into law a measure barring the public from knowing who holds a firearm owner identification card in Illinois.
The bill, passed overwhelmingly by Illinois lawmakers in May, was a victory for gun owners who say they have a right to privacy over open-government advocates who say such records should not be secret.
Quinn, who has said he agreed that the information should remain confidential, offered no immediate public comment Saturday, quietly announcing the bill signing by email to news outlets.
In a 42-1 vote, the Senate passed a measure overturning a ruling by Attorney General Lisa Madigans office that said the names are public under the states open records law. Madigans office issued the decree earlier this year after the Illinois State Police refused to release to The Associated Press the names of 1.3 million people who are registered to own firearms.
The APs request set off howls of protests from gun owners and the state police, who said they feared criminals would use the information to steal guns or target those who werent armed.
Someone that lives there should create a database that lists the names and adresses/phone numbers of every lawmaker, and their families, in NY state.
Until such a time that they pass a law making gun information NOT open to public record searches, the information should be plastered everywhere.
They may know WHAT we all have, but they have no way of knowing who has the resolve to use them.
I guess I am a little torn about having the gun owners names and addresses published.
The invasion of privacy is a problem, but it also lets the local crooks, criminals and thieves* know which houses are not hostile work places for them.
* not counting the elected crooks, criminals and thieves.
Good for them.
