President Obama has threatened House Speaker John Boehner that if no deal is struck on the fiscal cliff, he will use his Inaugural address and State of the Union speech next month to blame Republicans, according to the Wall Street Journal.
In the Journals behind the scenes account of how fiscal cliff talks between Obama and Boehner hit a wall, what comes across is that the president is emboldened by his reelection and eager to extract more concessions from Boehner than he was willing to accept during last summers debt limit talks.
This excerpt from the piece is revealing:
Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didnt reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.
At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?
You get nothing, the president said. I get that for free.
The whole article is well worth the read (subscription is required).
This is a threat? He was going to do that anyway. Screw him. The best thing the GOP House can do at this point is to take his damn checkbook away from him. Don’t raise the debt ceiling, and watch him squirm. You wanted $100 billion in spending cuts? Refuse to raise the debt ceiling, and you will get over ten times that.
go for it *sshole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as the Inauguration and the SOTU is concerned you make sure that no elected Republican attends. I would love to see a SOTU without 1 Republican in the building while shithead talks about all of his bipartisan efforts to do whatever it is (I really don't know) he does.
Correctamundo!
I like the idea of walking out of the SOTU if Obama does as expected and continues dividing the nation in the inauguration lecture and then the SOTU lecture.
What Obama won in November is the low-information voters’ version of American Idol. What we learned in 2010 and can be well positioned to do in 2014 is take control of the congress and take his leftist presidency away from him. It does require the strength and resolve to stand firm, and Boehner is very wobbly unless the conservatives show enough muscle to stand up to him. The Plan B failure was a good sign, and the best we can do let Boehner know he has no power to give any more concessions.
Obama won American Idol. He did not win the support of the producers in our country. He can be defeated by not giving in to him. We will see.
blaming folks for his incompetence is all he is good at.
What a friggin low life othug I.
Does anyone think 0bamugabe will praise Boehner and/or the GOP, other than in a backhanded way to demagogue something, no matter what they do? Is four years of his behavior not enough to get the picture?
Not really. He'd be preaching to the choir anyway. Who's going to bother watching his inauguration? It's going to be a campaign speech just like all his other speeches.
Yawn! Most people just change the station when he starts yapping. The guy just can't get enough of the sound of his own voice. He goes on, and on, and on. The next ting you know, all that's heard in any room is the loud snoring.
He’ll do that anyway.
Here's something else to be thinking on; how to beat the coming charges or racism. Dems have learned it works, so look for that to become standard fare. Forever.
“do what I want or I will say bad stuff about you”. freaking infant.
Walk the eff out of the SOTU, I’d pay money to see it.
I was thinking the same thing.
The saddest part is that Obama is the world's worst negotiator...
Boehner told the president, I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?
...Except for John Boehner.
The "Little Dictator" won the election on platform of raising taxes on the wealthy while Mitt wanted to cut social benefits and Big Bird. Not much we can do about it except for Boehner to start crying on live TV.
I am surprised how many are fighting for Millionaires. I would go for a deal that raises taxes and cutting taxes the same amount to payoff the debt. This way you can double down on the payoff.
We need to ignore the racism charges and continue the pressure. There was not a peep from the media on the charges of tokenism and Uncle Tom from the left when Cong. Tim Scott was elevated to the senate this week in SC. There was hardly a peep about the ESPN jerk that called conservative Redskins QB Robert Griffin III a cornball brother, not to mention the amount of money the left spent to defeat Allen West, a black man, or Mia Love, a black woman in their congressional races. Racism is a phony issue and the GOP should throw these examples in their faces and continue to charge forward.
The low-information, American Idol voters will not show up to defend the left in midterm elections. The only way to survive is to hold the conservative line and not give in. This was the key to the massive House win in 2010. The Plan B collapsed because at the state levels, key house members were threatened with Primary challenges, and those guys were forced to say no to Boehner. We need the same at the senate level, starting with McConnell and all the way down the line. Also, the middle of the road Democrats who are up in 2014 need strong challengers.
Boehner was "smoked out" by Pelosi, and now it's personal with him because he was so publicly humiliated. The "Plan B" fiasco was a vote of no-confidence for Boehner. He can't be trusted to make rational decisions anymore.
It's time for a new Speaker.

Some of us still believe in equality before the law, no matter how disconnected the denizens of Washington, DC are from that principle.
or....not attending State of Union address at all. Imagine half the house empty
Or completely empty!
Imagine Boehner locking the place down like Pelosi did back when the Republicans were demanding "drill baby drill" and were tweeting comments from the darkened House.
