Have nothing against Inouye in particular, but when 88 year-old Senators are dying in office (after having won re-election 2 years earlier), what does it say about politics in Hawaii, or the USA for that matter?
Amen to that! No matter how ill or incompetent they are, most politicians are pretty much guaranteed to stay in office for life. What about that one senator from S. Dakota who had the stroke? Has he recovered, or are other people voting for him? And, of course, there was Sen. Byrd who was obviously too ill to perform his duties, but nothing was done to remove him from office. We don’t have elected officials; we have royalty.
Medal of Honor recipient, a True American hero, not like some who are anointed by the media.

As an 80 year old I’m curious. What does it say?
.
Robert Bird
Storm Thurmond was reelected at age 95 or 96.
Diane Feinstein will be 86 when her current term is up.
What about Senators who died within the next term after not running again?
Arlen Specter was 82.
Jesse Helms was 87.

I totally agree..it was the first thing I thought of when I saw this..
Career politicians are the bane of our government.
Let's remember him though for his service in WWII, and other things ~ about 3 days before his encounter with Ollie North my spouse and I were at a JACL dinner, and because her mother's brother had won a Silver Star at Monte Casino, someone thought we should be seated with the Senator.
At the time she was pretty occupied with a new baby, but that kept her in touch with the news ~ in between diapers you read it, you watch it, you listen to it.
She asked him if he knew what he was doing going up against Ollie considering he was just about the most phenomenal fund raiser in American history.
He did some senatorial harrumphs and told us he thought he was ready, but you never really knew.
I think it was the following Tuesday evening he knew neither he nor anyone else was ready for Ollie.
That's how we remember him though, an authentic US Senator, who looked like a senator, who could harrumph like a senator, and equivocate like a senator ~ the real deal.
You can like him or not, but he fit the mold. And he was a quite pleasant dinner companion. He knew how to charm the folks.
Sad to see him go ~ should have retired ~ spent some free time on the beach eating sashimi and mashed potatoes with macaroni.
