“Have nothing against Inouye in particular, but when 88 year-old Senators are dying in office (after having won re-election 2 years earlier), what does it say about politics in Hawaii, or the USA for that matter?”

As an 80 year old I’m curious. What does it say?

He’s saying that it says that Politicians are spending their entire lives in elected office. Which is NOT what our founders intended.

I’m sure in the last election he agreed not to hold his opponent’s youth and inexperience against him (or her) (if he had an opponent).

It says we have a permanent, fossilized political class that that is ruling the country. They stay in office for life blocking any useful changes that might upset their own political support. They hold their seats like titles of nobility conferred by some monarch. It's long past time for term limits on all of these would be overlords.
