WXYZ) - Republicans rushed right-to-work legislation through the Michigan Legislature Thursday, drawing raucous protests from hundreds of union supporters, some of whom were pepper-sprayed by police when they tried to storm the Senate chamber.
With six-vote margins in both chambers, the House and Senate approved measures prohibiting private unions from requiring that nonunion employees pay fees. The Senate was debating a similar bill, with Democrats denouncing it as an attack on worker rights and the GOP sponsor insisting it would boost the economy and jobs. Separate legislation dealing with public-sector unions was expected to come later.

Wow! This is HUGE! Glad to see it. Hope it stands, legally! Wisconsin should be following suit in the next session. :)
From what I’ve heard the Michigan supreme court is heavily conservative, which most likely means if a court strikes it down it won’t be at state level. Besides, RTW laws are in use through out the USA and I doubt any grounds for striking it down could be found.
We have a conservative controlled supreme court so any fight will have to go to the feds and I’m not sure they can claim jurisdiction.
Exactly. Besides, this doesn’t take the right to unionize. Its pretty hard to justify forcing people to join.

I remember speaking to a relative several years ago, who was a “union steward” about his fears of direct deposit of paychecks, and his frustration that the union forced him to work to regain the job of a drunk at work union member, who was busted with a DWI driving a company truck.
I had to laugh about his concerns regarding the paycheck “issue”. I explained the feds and the State of Michigan already know how much each employee is paid, because the company bookkeepers have to report that every month.
It's not like tax cheating scams work if you are paid as an hourly or salaried employee of a large publically traded company.
The government already knew how much employees made that week, and took their cut first!
As for his supposed duty to “save the job” of the driver who chose to drive a company truck while drunk out of his mind...I asked him how he lived with himself.
They can see for themselves what the UAW did to Detroit.
Not just Detroit. The UAW has had it’s hand in screwing up the whole country. When they go on strike it hurts suppliers around the nation.
The state should now pass a bill to classify unions as corporations and make them pay taxes.
Congrats, Michigan! I hope Wisconsin can join you soon. However, we have had our hands full just keeping the PUBLIC EMPLOYEE unions at bay; not sure how the private unions will go for this yet.

MI Supreme Ct. Justice Hathaway is rat sponsored and is under investigation by the FBI through a mortgage fraud scheme, she’s done.
And will probably cop a plea deal to avoid prison.
MI Supreme Ct. will get another conservative seat, adding to the majority.
But does it apply to employer formed unions such as staffing agencies?
I really don’t know. I’ve never had any experience with them outside of temp services and the last thing they wanted was a union.
What happened in Wisconsin with the Walker issues, along with Indiana going RTW, had a lot to do with MI piling on in the upper Midwest today.
The unions really over-stepped their value here when they crammed a ballot issue aka Prop. 2 here, a pre-emptive strike to defend parasitical collective bargaining in our state constitution.
They got creamed. But just know Walker had a lot to do with inspiring our Gov. Snyder to stand up and do the right thing.
And MI wasn’t remotely in the same mess WI was a couple years ago, so your good people gave us a favor and we are paying you back!
I love Wisconsin (except the Badgers LOL) and we vacationed there this year.
Wow, the drought in southern WI was just awful, worse than here, really painful to see all those dead farms.
One big difference though between our sister states, you have a continuing mess in your state senate, ours is a 2:1 bullet proof, veto proof, GOP majority.
Right to work in Michigan is only 5 days away.

Its funny but I’ve never been to Wisconsin. My grandfather was born in Beloit.
We were fortunate to be one of the last travelers on the S.S. Badger from Manitowoc to Ludington on that old historic ship this fall.
The EPA has shut it down for now, she burns coal.
Nature and libtards has not made it easy for us to visit our sister state, you either have to go through Chicago, cross Lake Michigan, or drive through the UP.
Of course one can fly there, but why bother.
Also put them under the fair and impartial IRS randomly based financial audits, just to make certain they are not abusing their status, and maintain all the required records and tax certificates, physically on file, as required.

I was suggesting that they appear to work in a similar manner and provide similar protections to the employer - independent of any law. If the workers get uppity, pull the contracts for a safe reason and bring in replacements more willing to work.
The largest reason why those agencies don’t want unions is that they would scare away contracts.
This. If they did, watch Union dues skyrocket so the union bosses can keep their exact same salaries.

As a former member of the Teamsters (I hope they rot in hell like Hoffa is right now), I say congrats Michigan Republicans who rammed the legislation thru.
Hoffa is preserved in the concrete foundation of the Detroit Renaissance Center...
here is what I think is happening.
I think blacks are starting to leave the rust belt states that they have helped destroy and are starting to move back to the south. In particular Virginia and North Carolina, which is why those two states have suddenly become competitive for the democrats.
But, look for the rust best states to start moving right in the coming elections post Obama.

Rules require a five-day wait before the House and Senate vote on each other’s bills, which would prohibit making payment of union fees a condition of employment. They are scheduled to reconvene Tuesday, when Michigan could become the 24th state with right-to-work laws if the measures are quickly enacted and Snyder signs them, as he has pledged to do.So the unions have until Tuesday to twist some arms in an effort to derail this. Expect an ugly weekend in the Michigan capital.
Yep. We need to fix our Voter ID problem/Voter FRAUD problem, and become a Right To Work State. I’m pretty sure Governor Walker is working on both of those things.
My fondest wish is that EVERY Republican Governor is emboldened by these moves, grows a pair, and stands up for We The Taxpayers.
Then, and only then, can We The People fight the Feds from a place of power in our individual states.

No as I understand it no arm twisting, the Gov signs on Tuesday period....
The reason employers go to staffing agencies/contractors are:
1) To prevent employees from organizing (but this is far from the main reason)
2) To protect themselves from federal & state laws/red-tape concerning full time employees (this is by far the #1 reason, and with the implementation of ObamaCare we’ll see even more companies dumping their full-time staff and going to contract labor)
3) To get just-in-time skill sets (this is particularly true in IT—computers—where technology changes so quickly that companies have a hard time keeping up) which allows a company to bring on contractors for a specific project, then release them at the end of the project.

You said they just lie about it, though, and probably 99% of the union people actually believe that “right to work” outlaws unions.
In practice, it actually will be the end of unions, because given the choice, people won’t choose union membership.

I was an AFL-CIO member myself and hated it. I called union dues my “Union Tax” because unions are just one more layer of unresponsive government.
This good news from Michigan and other states with recent right-to victories has been brought to us by Barack Obama’s failed economic policies, which have hastened the destruction of unions and the corrupt cities they dominate.
Take what’s left of Detroit...please. The only thing that’s been growing in Detroit during the Obama years has been its poverty level.
As unions continue to lose power in non-productive Democratic Detroit, the productive, anti-union Republican areas of Michigan correspondingly gain power in the state legislature, with yesterday’s results.
After four more years of Obama, will unions like the UAW still exist? If the so-far courageous Republican governors in the Midwest don’t go wobbly, no.
