Chris Christie Wept over Springsteen Hug
Time ^ | Nov. 07, 2012 | By Emma O'Connor

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie may have worked closely with President Obama in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, but it appears he’s more emotionally invested in a different budding bromance. Christie admitted at a Monday briefing that he started “weeping” after he hugged Bruce Springsteen at NBC’s telethon for Hurricane Sandy victims on Nov. 2, the Record reported.

Christie is a longtime fan of his fellow New Jerseyan and has attended more than 130 Springsteen concerts over the past 37 years. The governor even sang a version of “Thunder Road” when he made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in September. Although Springsteen has never hid his liberal leanings, the E Street Band front man set aside his ideological differences with Christie to chat with the Republican governor and his family at the Radio City event to benefit Sandy victims.

“We hugged,” Christie said to a crowd of relief volunteers in Monmouth County on Monday, according to the Record. “Yeah, we hugged, and he told me it’s official: we’re friends.”

Christie and Springsteen had met twice before, but their interactions were limited to “formal pleasantries,” the Record noted. Their previously tense relationship may have stemmed from their opposing presidential preferences — Christie campaigned for GOP candidate Mitt Romney, while Springsteen was active in fundraisers for Obama. Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, however, managed to bring the two Jersey boys together.

“I told the President today actually that the hug was great and that when we got home there was a lot of weeping because of the hug,” Christie said. “And the President said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Well, to be honest, I was the one weeping. Everyone else was fine.’ ”

And now there’s no boardwalk under which they could consecrate their love.

And “Born To Run” refers to NJ as a death trap, and talks about your girlfriend dropping off her “brats” with her mother so you can go out on a suicide run.

Does Bruce have his shirt sleeves rolled up and out in the trenches in NJ helping? I think the concert and helping Barry campaign was his contribution.

I know. It also wasn't one of his first four records, which was the subject of my post.

Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey (1973)
The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle (1973)
Born to Run (1975)
Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)

"Born In The U.S.A." was released in 1984.

Uh who gaf. Christie should have been weeping for the people in his state dealing with the Sandy disaster and not weeping over some old rock star. Self centered pig.

I think you have some of his songs mixed up there, dude. LOL.

The line about dropping off the brats is from "Jersey Girl," not "Born To Run." I don't think "Jersey Girl" was released on a studio album, but there's a live version on Springsteen 1975-85 box set.

“I met Michael Brecker, I didn’t weep.”

I drove Frank Zappa around Milwaukee for a weekend. We had a blast! At the time, he was my musical hero. We laughed a lot! And I never paid for another concert. There were always stage passes at the ticket booth for me. I was very happy to meet him. I didn’t cry. Then I met my abdo-lute steel guitar hero, John Hughey. Spent an hour with him, and he ended up buying the brand of steel that I played. I was very excited, and happy to meet and spend time with my “hero.” But I didn’t get weepy. Well,,,, not until he passed. That was a sad day. Christy is a jerk! A wus!

I was nore disturbed when I read that Christie's been to 130 Springsteen concerts.

I went to one -- at the Meadowlands in New Jersey back in 1986 -- and I vowed I'd never go again. Nothing against Springsteen, but the noise of a rock concert is intolerable and the quality of the music is really poor. LOL.

I don’t have a real big amount of respect for a grown man still so affected by a rock star. Just don’t get it. Don’t get Christie. I do like straight talk but it has to come from somewhere and be across the board.

Have you ever heard such fangirl kinda stuff from a grown middleaged man over a singer? Saying he was weeping because Springsteen lied and said “We’re friends” haha
What a dope, Christie. I almost feel bad for the insecure f*cker.
