There are more mathematically complex and accurate methods of calling a race than staring at the raw vote totals, and actually the networks are typically fairly conservative - you can generally do it before they do.
99% of the time the combination of exit polls and the actual results from select precincts, compared to the last election, is going to tell you who won. 2000 was the exception.
I wish people didn’t treat math like some sort of voodoo sorcery.
The reality is most of the time, the average of the polls is more or less correct, and the same is true of exit polls.

I agree. As an old white guy, I could not imagine how anyone who lived thru the last 4 years would want more of the same. I could not imagine how anyone on the liberal side could be afraid of the most liberal republican who ever ran for President. I just could not imagine how anyone would be ENTHUSIASTIC for such a total failure as Barack Obama.
I was wrong. I told our Sunday School class a few years ago that I believed Obama was God’s judgment on America. I had hoped and prayed that God might lift his judgment, but it seems very likely now that America is giving God the middle finger salute, so that all the heavens will see God’s righteousness in damning us.
It honestly never occurred to me that Obama could break 47% tops, and probably 45%. I did not realize how far America has sunk.
Obama’s life long pastor called on God to “damn America”, and it looks to me like God is going to use the 20+ year follower of Rev Wright to do just that.
Forgive me for being so down. I spent 25 years in the military, and now I don’t recognize the county I loved.

Lessons learned going forward: 1/ Do not guess states based on the anecdotal counting of yard signs; 2/ Do not guess states based on rally attendance; 3/ The polling averages, i.e. RCP, are actually pretty accurate...
2000—I hate to even mention it but there is a possibility that five or six states have recounts—2000 on steroids!

I said to my husband that we have to just unlearn everything we’ve learned. I have lived enough time in Europe to observe. You need to find a way to live in that system. Basically that means you trade time (off) for everything else.I don’t like it but it is he way it is.
