Many protective mothers and fathers of Millennials aren't allowing their kids to play tackle football because of health risks. These attitudes could close the NFL’s pipeline to many talented players. But these concerns also have the potential to change the violent NFL culture for the better.
Professional football has been America’s favorite spectator sport since 1972 when baby boomers became the most important TV audience demographic. Steve Sabol, the genius behind NFL Films that helped to popularize the NFL in the 1960s, captured the drama and danger of pro football with his slow motion films of big violent hits backed by stirring music.
Pro football, depicted by Mr. Sabol as a confrontation between good and evil in which there can be only one winner, matched the values of baby boomers a half century ago. But this focus is not as appealing to the Millennial generation with its focus on win-win solutions and an instinct for avoiding confrontation.

Well, this red blooded American female watches and attends professional sports of all kinds, football, baseball, hockey, golf, heck I’ve even been known to watch NASCAR although I prefer Formula 1/Indy. While not a rider, I’ve also attended some equestrian events and even once went to the horse track – and yes I gambled – nothing more than a two dollar bet on each race but it was a blast. I even went to a PBA competition. Your tag line says your heros have always been cowboys BTW but I guess you think those professionals are thugs and barbarians too.
But I don’t like “country” music however, so guess what. I don’t by country music or go to country concerts. See how easy that is?
Equating sports with porn, illegal drugs, “illegal sex” (and I’m guessing you mean prostitution and not just something other than the missionary position or (shudders) having fun during sex), has to be one of the most inane comments I’ve seen around here in a while. And that’s saying a lot.

The NHL grosses about $3B a year (and that includes Canadians). The NFL does about $9B. NBA about $5B.
I am sure many people enjoy Hockey. Me, it is soccer on ice with the same boring basis. Just faster.

I hate them because they are Team Obama, and because they are the favorite team of the mainstream media. I tend go the opposite way of the MSMs.
I've definitely seen many bandwagon Steeler fans with no ties to PA who root for them because it's the popular thing to do. Sports bars here are infested with Steeler vermin every Sunday. Go into any local football bar in central Texas where a Texas team is playing the Steelers, and chances are you'll see more Steelers fans than Texans or Cowboys fans. I saw this phenomenon when I lived in Florida too. They're like roaches, and obnoxious as hell too.

I go back to the original six. The idea of ice hockey in Phoenix and L.A. amuses me.
My sons and grandsons all play hockey and we are Bruins B.U. Terrier fans.

That’s not why, good grief. These “parents” aren’t raising the kids, they’re merely acting as proxies for anti-American groups inside and outside the country.

Actually when you look at this database of NFL players and arrests NFL Arrests Database , in recent years at least, the Baltimore Ravens have been one of the “cleaner” teams and the Steelers seem to have had about the same number of players arrested as the Ravens. I don’t think coach Harbaugh puts up with much off field shenanigans, the team having cleaned up its off field act since Harbaugh took over.
As far as Ray Lewis; by his own admission he was living the party life and hanging out with thugs. Lewis describes the events of 2000 and his indictment on charges of murder and aggravated assault as a “watershed moment”, a wakeup call. It’s still unclear exactly what his involvement was; he admitted to lying to the police and allegedly stood by doing nothing while his companions killed a pair of men, however the murder and aggravated assault charges against Lewis were dropped in exchange for his testimony against the other men and a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to a year of probation. The NFL fined him $250,000. It should also be noted that his companions were subsequently acquitted on grounds of self-defense; their defense was that the two men killed had threatened Lewis' group with a gun.
Of course some people think Lewis was guilty of murder and got off easy and I get that perception – it’s still murky exactly what happened that night. However no one can say that Ray Lewis hasn’t been squeaky clean ever since. He became deeply religious, a committed and vocal Christian and it’s evidently not an act. He mentors and speaks to young NFL players about what not to do with their lives, using his past as an example.
“I tell them, ‘Trust me, don’t ever take my path,’ ” Lewis said. “ ‘Don’t ever do it the way I did it because everyone won’t make it. You got to be willing to walk in a storm.’ That’s what I tell people all the time: ‘If there’s something in your life that you know needs changing, make sure you change it before God’s got to change it. Because if God’s got to change it, you ain’t going to like it.’ ”
Something a lot of people don’t know about Ray Lewis is that although he makes good money from endorsements and giving paid inspirational/motivational speeches, often with a strong underlying Christian message, a lot of corporate gigs, he also gives talks to youth groups, often quietly, without fan fare, sometimes unannounced and at no charge.
Believe it or not, Lewis went from being one of the NFL’s bad boys, a self admitted thug in the past, to one of the NFL’s good guys and a role model on how to turn one’s life around.
Glad to hear that Lewis has made the conversion from sinner to Saint; nevertheless, I’ll save what little admiration I have for the tattooed arts leagues for people like his teammate, Matt Birk.
