According to a Romney aide not authorized to speak publicly about the event, the campaign followed its usual protocol for impromptu, on-the-road stops by candidates: A staffer was dispatched to the St. Vincent De Paul Society ahead of Ryan's visit Saturday morning and spoke with a woman in charge on site, who said that it would be fine for the congressman to stop by. The campaign did not contact Antal ahead of the visit.
The woman on site told the Romney staffer that some of the volunteers had already left, but that most were happy to remain until Ryan arrived, according to the aide. After Ryan left the soup kitchen, the woman approached a campaign staffer and expressed gratitude for Ryan's visit, the aide said.
Chris Maloney, Ohio communications director for the Romney campaign, said that the visit by Ryan had been intended to highlight the work of the soup kitchen volunteers.
"Our campaign and Congressman Ryan were pleased to bring attention to the meaningful charitable contributions the St. Vincent De Paul Society makes to people in need," Maloney said.
Antal, a self-described independent voter, said that he "can't fault my volunteers" for letting the campaign in but said that the campaign "didn't go through the proper channels."

“According to a Romney aide not authorized to speak publicly about the event,”
In other words, a Post reporter who picked up a dropped hanky for a Ryan campaign worker once, ten years ago...
Whenever a brain-dead liberal is unhappy, I’m happy.
This is news?
Years ago when I listed to Cspan, they added an “independent” choice for callers. The independents who went out of their way to call were exceptionally cagey (manipulative) DNC slogan speakers pretending to be independents or compeletely stupid gimme girl leftists. Liberals got two to one in calls after they added the independent political category.
It might be different now that the GOP is leftist again and conservatives are more independent and call in to CSPAN. I stopped listening to Cspan expect for certain business when they went left. Leftist (’mainstream’) media at that time were defining independents as moderates and moderates they defined as desiring the leftist agenda.
Oops. The comment above is on the wrong thread. Sorry.
It is truly amazing that the liberals are beating this one to death....put Brian J. Antal in Google and you get hundreds of posts and articles. Far more than you get from the ensuing Libya scandal. Clearly their desperate attempt to change the subject. Pitiful losers!
Even if he is the President of the County's St Vincent de Paul Society, I find his referring to them as "my" volunteers strange.
As a Catholic, I find most people involved in the St Vincent de Paul Society to feel as if they are Christ's Volunteers, glorifying Christ by emulating the virtuous example of St. Vincent de Paul.
It was a great comment though!

Loved that episode.
That was sweet.
This is in downtown Youngstown Ohio - the kitchen is literally a couple of blocks from where Ryan was talking at Youngstown State on Saturday. Democrats in this area are vapid radicals. Antal is a Democrat and I say that based on knowing the family and the local paper, The Vindicator, ran a big piece about the “photo op”. Ryan got about 1,400 people that turned out for the townhall and there are signs everywhere for RR in the burbs.
And I'm the self-described King of England.
Why would Antal have ANY problem with high profile CATHOLIC candidate visiting his CATHOLIC organization and giving it untold amounts of great publicity?
Antal outed himself as a Democrat, and as being a director who should find employment elsewhere.
If the other Catholic (in Name Only) Biden came, there would be a red carpet laid out.
As a member of our local St. Vincent De Paul council we would have welcomed Paul Ryan and his Catholic values. Part of our mission is stated in my tagline.
Local paper went further today - Antal is against Ryan because Ryan’s budget would eliminate (gag) $12,000 in federal funding. Is on record saying it.
