Occupy protesters pick on Oakland
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/8/12 | Chip Johnson

Occupy protesters are like a bunch of neighborhood kids who've figured out which houses they can pelt with eggs and rocks and get away with it.

And in the Bay Area's thriving anarchist/protest community, everybody knows the answer to that one: Oakland City Hall. It's an unrestricted public space with little police presence, even less common sense from its elected leaders and easy access to the rest of downtown.

The place is perfect.

Sunday night, a group of about 200 protesters gathered outside City Hall and proceeded to march through downtown shattering store windows and car windshields and tossing paint like they owned the place.

It hardly matters whether protesters are marching against war, wealth disparity or police abuse. Since the Occupy protests began almost a year ago, Oakland has become the official whipping boy of Bay Area protesters. The lenient scapegoat city. The unwanted stepchild punished for the actions of others.

Is there any privately-owned business left in Oakland?

Didn’t Oakland’s own mayor give them free reign when all this started?

In the old days they might hire some reliable thugs to drive by at high speed firing into the crowd. The city could blame it on vigilantes.

Game 3 of the playoffs in Oakland tonight.

First the Detroit police harass the crowd in Detroit and now the other idiots can harass the crowd there.

Oakland= UC Berkeley’s “South Campus”

Remember, Oakland has’t had a sane Mayor or City Council since the early 1970’s Recent Mayors: Jerry Brown and “Red Ron” Dellums

2 of the heavily damaged buildings were banks.

There was almost $100,000 worth of total damage done in a very short time.

Oakland officials claimed that because it happened so fast—within 40 minutes—they could not respond in time to catch ANY of the perps.!!

40 minutes?

When the police are only 40 minutes away and seconds count-——you are on your own.

“In the old days they might hire some reliable thugs...”

In the olden times it would have been axe-handles and truncheons
