Bayonne school district lowers passing grade for students
Jersey Journal ^ | AUGUST 26, 2012

Passing math class is about to become just a tad easier for some 9,600 Bayonne public school students. After several months of preparation and discussion, Bayonne public school officials have decided to lower the passing grade in all classes from 70 to 65 as part of a three-year pilot program. The reason: success leads to more success, according to Bayonne school honchos. "We have very high expectations and standards for each one of our students," Superintendent of Schools Patricia L. McGeehan said in a statement last week about the change. "However, we must be sensitive to the unique challenges they face and provide strategies and interventions that help students achieve their goals."

God help these kids when they step into the real world and find out they don't get an "A" just for showing up...

The Kenyan must go.

Good reason for yanking your kids and putting them in a private school.

When my daughter was a student at Capistrano Valley High School in CA, 40% was a passing grade in Algebra.

When I was in high school, a long time ago, we had a failing grade of 68, which was an E. if you got an E (from 60-68) you had the option of going to summer school, below 60 was an F and you had to take the whole course over.

why not just give them a Pass/Fail, pass them all, and be done with it...

“We have very high expectations and standards for each one of our students,” ... so therefore we are lowering our standards.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I remember when the Village People were “big” that Saturday Night Live did a skit on “In the Navy” called “Port of Call: Bayonne, New Jersey”. Bayonne has been the butt of many jokes over the years. Now Bayonne is making itself into an even bigger joke.

I suspect the next step is too issue two coupons on birth certificates, one becomes a driver’s license in 16 years and the other a high school diploma in 17-1/2 years.

“We have very high expectations and standards for each one of our students,”

I guess it’s all in how one defines “High”.

“...sensitive to the unique challenges...”

Translation: We have to lower the bar so enough blacks can pass!
Sure to GOD these people don’t think they’re KIDDING anybody!

FTA: “Success leads to more success”

What does “fake success” lead to?

Make it -1- and you'll have "success" all over the place ...

Math is a progressive endeavor.

You take simple, intermediate, and more complex courses, until you have attained your goal.

What chance do you have to become proficient in the higher courses, if you only get 66% right in the foundational courses?

Shouldn’t professional educators know this?

I’d rather see a kid held over a year or even three, and then graduated with sufficient skills to get them through life. We are graduating kids today, that will be a burden on society for their entire lives.

It’s getting to the place having a high school diploma means nothing. Getting? It’s already there isn’t it.

“If the kids are trying it’s not fair that they can’t meet a number standard,” she said.

Try telling that to your boss when you grow up and see how that works out for you.

Or the IRS. I sent in a few dollars, but it’s not fair if I can’t meet a “number standard.”

“We have to lower the bar so enough blacks can pass!”

I live in Bayonne for many years, there are not too many black people there. I’m going to assume that it is the Hispanics who are failing.

That being said, to me 65 was always the passing grade, so to mark it there doesn’t bother me too much.
