Stunning new footage of six police officers gunning down a Michigan man in an intense, five-second burst of 46 shots was made public Friday, setting off fierce reaction from members of a community still grappling with the incident.

"I'm stunned that six human beings would stand in front of one human being and fire 46 shots," victim Milton Hall’s mother, Jewel, told CNN.

Jewel Hall told the Albuquerque Journal that her son struggled with a mild form of mental illness through the years but was able to live on his own and did have an apartment in Saginaw.

And you know who was paying for that. Dear media, he wasn’t homeless!

One crazed man with a knife plus six cops plus adrenalin pumping at highest levels plus a double tap philosophy plus fear (maybe) = overkill.

Seems like there could be a better way to subdue a knife wielding suspect and all those cops around. Why not fire some sort of netting around him and then run it around in a circle to wrap him all up. Seems a bit excessive gunning him down like that surrounded by multiple police.

“I didn’t want to look, I am not a voyeur of slayings”

Your decision is wise. Such things take their toll. I once had to watch an evidence tape of a male prostitute demonstrating all that he was capable of performing. If I could get those sullied bits of my brain cut out I would. Homicides, torture etc. are even worse.

That is part of the problem here, too. Police are exposed to the worst behavior of the species day after day. It is not an edifying or uplifting experience. IMO, most city street cops are simmering at some level of emotional trauma most of the time, on duty or off.

Ugly incident, and it won’t end well for anyone.

I agree. He was walking away.

Where did I say that? I think I can speak for myself without your “help”.

Yes, but not nearly as worked up as watching a city-sanctioned firing squad in action.

“How many of them hit their intended target?”

Maybe they were all trying to shoot the dog.

Three are some good, objective concerns voiced here on this thread. But I'm the kind of person who thinks that if you're facing a bunch of cops with their guns drawn and you ignore their commands to drop your weapon, you've really forfeited whatever considerations you might have been accorded as a human being ... and nobody has any reason to complain about how the situation was handled.

I'll go back to a bit of sage wisdom I once heard from someone who knows a lot about these things:

"If you want to eliminate all of the troubling aspects of police shootings, just let lawyers respond to these kinds of 911 calls for a few months."

Something is wrong here. The guy had a mental problem. A situation like this calls for a taser. As soon as the guy stopped moving towards them they should have stopped the shooting.

Having SAID that, part of the problem here is the “police force of occupation”. This is turning into a racial incident - white cops versus black victim. We need to re-establish residency requirements for cops. If they don’t live in a jurisdiction in which they want to work, they should move there. If they were locals they might have known this guy better as a mental case. At the very least, some of them or all of them, might have been black which would have diffused the anger.

There should be a better way to handle a mental case with a knife than blowing him away with 46 bullets. Had the guy had a gun, my reaction would have been totally different and I think they would have been wholly justified.

They had their guns out and aimed at him.
Why didn’t they release the dog?

And they would have come at this one with tasers, and...? There’s such thing as being a caricature of a statist, and you come nigh to that.

????

The dog, if trained right, would have taken him down by the weapon hand and ended it. I have seen them at work personally.

No, they wouldn't have. They wouldn't come at all. That was the point. They're only good at being Monday-morning quarterbacks.

We had a similar shooting here in New York City within the last week or so. The scene unfolded right there in Times Square in broad daylight, and the police surrounded the loony-tune and followed him for blocks -- clearing traffic and pedestrians out of the way -- before he lunged at them with a large knife and they killed him in a hail of gunfire.

I'm no "statist," either. I would rather have the convenience store staff deal with this nonsense, which is exactly what would have happened if the police weren't just a phone call away.

We "forefeit" NOTHING. We are not SLAVES, you cowering piece...

We are FREE HUMAN BEINGS and the police have to follow the LAW, DUE PROCESS, and respect our CIVIL RIGHTS and the CONSTITUTION. We have EVERY reason to police the police, and complain, over the loss of these rights.

Your "might makes right" attitude is - literally - sickening. You want to see where it leads? Look at Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and Communist China.

If the police are intent on murder, do THEY forfeit their rights? SHOULD a free people stand up to murdering police, or should we go quietly into death?

DAMN your groveling, jackboot-licking cowardice!
