Will media rush to judgment?
At approximately 11:35 a.m. eastern Casey Mattox of the Family Research Council tweeted that there had been a shooting at their headquarters in downtown DC. While few details are known, Mattox reports that a guard was shot.
Mattox reported that they were “on lockdown” on the 5th floor, and later made it outside. Mattox tweeted a photo a few minutes later, at 10:48 a.m. eastern:
A statement was released on the FRC Blog:
Incident at FRC Headquarters
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins made the following comments after an FRC security guard was shot this morning:
The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family.
The Family Research Council, a pro-Christian nonprofit, was named a hate group in 2010 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, along with such groups at the Ku Klux Klan, for its “anti-gay” positions. Professor Jacobson reported on SPLC’s exaggerations and false accusations in November 2010.
From the Family Research Council website:
Since 1983, Family Research Council (FRC) has advanced faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion. FRC’s team of seasoned experts promotes these core values through policy research, public education on Capitol Hill and in the media, and grassroots mobilization. We review legislation, meet with policymakers, publish books and pamphlets, build coalitions, testify before Congress, and maintain a powerful presence in print and broadcast media. Through our outreach to pastors, we equip churches to transform the culture.
The FRC also has been targeted by groups like the Human Rights Campaign. From the Human Rights Campaign website:
The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the Family Research Council (FRC) as a hate group because of their propagation of known falsehoods claims about [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people that have been thoroughly discredited by scientific authorities and repeated.
It is possible this is a random act, and at this stage given that we do know the motive for the crime, we certainly do not want to jump to false conclusions.
We will update as more details are known.
Update: At 12:17 p.m. eastern, Mattox reported that a bomb squad was entering the building. ABC reports that a suspect is in custody and the guard who was shot in the arm is conscious and breathing.
Harry picture. Looks like they’re all sliding down a hill at some kind of crazed angle.
So will SPLC get blamed for ‘inciting violence’? I’m not holding my breath.
The hate group, Homeland inSecurity, uses SPLC’s radical political “research” to tag “domestic terrorists” in the United States. That is why the military is running war games against the Tea Party.
That conservative groups have legally and politically permitted themselves to be targeted for murder by radicals inside and outside the government in this way, is suicidal.
Not to worry it is just one of the Gaystapo using their right to free speech to protest a group that gets money from the founder of Chick-A-Fila.
Nothing to see here just move along
Probably just another right-wing, Tea Party, domestic terrorist type snapped. (/s)
“That conservative groups have legally and politically permitted themselves to be targeted for murder by radicals inside and outside the government in this way, is suicidal.”
There is no sense in that statement.
What you say is true. But the reverse is also true. Those who believe that they can slaughter us with impunity will discover that is also a suicidal idea. For many, it will be the last 'discovery' they'll ever make. Trust me on this.
Is Brian Ross reporting that it’s one of those crazy teapartiers?
Now, is this guy a registered Democrat? Bwahahahahaha ~ do we need to ask.
Interesting. I don’t if you’ve seen some of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, but he sometimes used camera angles like that to emphasize a bizarre mood. Orson Wells also did that (Citizen Kane).
LOL. Naw, dems don’t like guns, the shooter HAS to be one of the crazy tea partiers who cling to their guns and bibles!
SPLC designated Family Research Council (and many others) as a “hate group”. Really unjust, and gives liberals the idea that these groups should be targeted.
So, whaddaya think, is he a registered Democrat, or a neutered Democrat?
Seriously, isn't this the kind of gay guy Bill Ayers would invite to a garden party to meet Obama? He'd say "Hey, Hussein, you'll just love this fellow; got real fire in his pistol, doncha' know".
SPLC encourages this sort of violence with their group categorizations. Time for a serious lawsuit ~ and they got the money to get!
Yeah, I’ve been wondering for a long time why no one has sued them for libel. Long overdue, and I hope someone on the “hate group” list is on the phone with their attorneys right about now...
If they can find the slightest relationship between SPLC and the shooter ~ maybe just an internet search ~ I think there are plenty of fine lawyers out there who know what to do.
If they can find the slightest relationship between SPLC and the shooter
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
That will probably not happen.
BUT
If they go to his page and find
“Last week my mother asked me over for tea and we were going to discuss my sisters birthday party.”
NOW, that is definitely a connection to the TEA Party.
What's he think about Conservatives involved in that issue getting shot at by Obama death squad operatives?
