DALLAS - Dallas County's top official has declared a public health emergency, saying the spread of the West Nile virus has become epidemic. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced the declaration in a statement issued Thursday night. Jenkins says county officials are doing all they can to fight the spread of the virus but need the public to do their part. Dallas County health officials have reported 162 West Nile virus cases and nine West Nile deaths so far this year. Mosquitoes pick up the virus from birds they bite and then spread it to people.

Interesting, it is the same pathogen. Maybe I knew that previously and forgot it. The newspaper articles here typically use one description or the other depending on the victim but not so often both in the same article (my excuse).

I suppose I can see your point but there is a line between doing something exciting and doing something truly dangerous or stupid. No broken bones in the family yet although I am growing concerned for my mom who is 96 and has taken a few falls lately. A person I used to work with in the pest control industry told me that DDT was still being manufactured in Venezuela. If true, how ironic is it that the best, most effective pesticide for mosquitoes ever invented is free to be used in Hugo Chavez’s socialist state, but not in the United States!
