Thune Called Romney's 'Sleeper' VP Pick
Newsmax ^ | June 11, 2012

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota is being touted as a “sleeper” candidate to serve as Mitt Romney’s vice president, the Sioux City Journal reported.

Thune may be at a disadvantage because he comes from a state with only three electoral votes, South Dakota Democratic Party Executive Director Ben Nesselhuf told the Journal. So electoral strategy might tempt Romney to pick Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida or Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio. Rubio ‘s Florida has 29 electoral votes and Portman’s Ohio has 18. That aside, Thune has qualities to match the job, according to Doug Gross, an Iowa Republican strategist and former candidate for governor.

"[The vice presidential pick] needs to be competent, capable, and respected,” Gross told the Journal. “[Thune] meets that requirement. They need to be capable of being president some day. I think he meets that requirement . . . Thune could really be the sleeper here.”

Gross said Romney likely has Thune in in his top five. “[Romney] doesn't need a Hail Mary pass, so he doesn't need a Sarah Palin-type. In fact, he needs someone who is perceived as competent and steady," Gross told the Journal.

At a recent stop in Custer in his home state of South Dakota, Thune said he would “never say never” if tapped by the Republican presidential nominee Romney to serve, the Journal reported.

“I don’t think you ever rule out or say no to opportunities to public service if you are really interested in making a difference for your country -- you want to put your gifts and abilities to the highest and best use,” Thune said.

>> Outside of Chaney or GHW Bush - name two vp before Klinton.

Figure you’d go for broke on the spelling?

Rubio would solidify the hispanic vote. and for the most part is a solid conservative....

I would suggest Palin again, but you dont do veep twice once your McLame loses...she would be a great presidential candidate(how about a push at the convention folks) but her Veep time is over....

Where do you folks get the silly notion that the parents must be born here?

Nonsense!

If you notice the guys everyone can name Johnson and Ford...they became presidents because of bad luck i.e. Kennedy and Nixon. But the idea of bringing someone into the VP slot who would be a good leader in 8 years is stupid. GHW Bush ran close to Regean and was an easy choice to carry on, but Rubio or any of the Young Guns still need some results.

Where do you get the idea that it is a notion that parents must be born here? No such limited notion is proposed by persons holding to the Constitution. The crux of eligibility for POTUSA is that parents have to be Citizens of the USA. The Founding Fathers realized there had to be some element of dedicated/established loyalty to the USA by the parents. This is not a silly requirement even though it it is not a guarantee against someone like Axelrod becoming eligible. Nonsense you say? I have a different value for the Constitutional history.

You seemed to have omitted the quote from the Constitution...

“The crux of eligibility for POTUSA is that parents have to be Citizens of the USA.”

Palin made me happier to vote for McPain.

But in hindsight it shouldn’t have mattered. As VP she either would have been the loyal trooper or else been frozen out, either way irrelevant.

I don’t think anyone McPain could have picked would have changed my vote to 3P other than maybe LIARMAN, what a disaster that would have been.

Yeah, I was discussing veep choices and didn't list Romney because he's not going to be picked for veep in 2012. :-p

But if the 2002 Romney was a veep choice, he'd also be unacceptable

2002 Thune would be okay though, he was a fairly decent Congressman but turned out to be a dud in the Senate.

Hey, as long as we're on this, can I bring back the 1998 Bob Barr forward in a time machine so he can beat the crap out of his 2012 counterpart? ("Look, just shut up, you ACLU whore!") I'd pay money to see that. ;-)
