The AR-15 Is The Number One Selling Rifle In The U-S

ELBERTA, Summerdale --

President Obama's decision to talk gun control and discuss a ban on assault weapons are hot topics along the Gulf Coast.

Despite the tragic, shooting massacre in Colorado, gun shops continue to sell AR-15's and AK-47's to gun enthusiasts and sportsmen.

The AR-15 is NOT widely used in crime.

According the FBI, of the 199 homicides recorded in Alabama in 2010, handguns were used in 112, hands, fists or feet were used in 17, knives were used in 23....none were committed with a rifle.

Gun control has and will be debated for decades...an issue now on presidential campaign agenda.

Reportedly the bad guys are hiding behind stone walls, thick earthworks or other similar things that the 5.56 can’t punch through or sometimes they’re firing from beyond 5.56 effective range. The 7.62 NATO comes as an unwelcome surprise to those people, apparently.

And if you’re referencing the entire run, the correct answer is, “Both.” Which is still very annoying when it’s trivia time. :P

The AR-15 is typically the higher end of the sports rifle crowd. The Ak variant sports rifles are a bit cheaper and vary in levels of qualify reflecting the price.

I'm not so keen on an AR-15 knowing the requirement for constant maintenance and the issues that plague it if one does not follow a ritualized maintenance regiment.

That being said, give me something that will pop through CBS in one shot and reach and touch the target behind it.

Obama would, too. He just has to disarm us first.

I’m not a big fan of the original AR gas system myself. Though the piston uppers look like they may eventually fix that problem.

In the meantime, I’m sticking with things like the FAL, AK, etc., that have gas pistons, when I want to rely on them. The ARs are for range fun. As one person put it, the AR is like Barbie for men.

Totally speculating here, but I’ve heard the Italians brought some along when they were participating in Afghanistan. They may have left them behind. Or, uh, ‘lost’ a few.

I love this picture...saw it the other day here at FR. do you know where it took place and what the situation was?

Back when this event took place there was a posting on FR that showed a series of pictures(this is in China in case you hadn't noticed). The picture after this picture showed the girl lying in the ditch with her face now flat and empty of brains. All of the people lined up on the ditch were shot out of hand. Nothing about these pictures inspires love in me, what it does inspire is more of the hatred I have of governments which abuse their power.

I remember back in the early 1970s dealers could not give away an AR-15 (except to me!). All everyone wanted were hunting rifles. When I showed them my AR they would say...”But will it knock down a deer?”

Then Mel Tappan started his survivalist column in Guns and Ammo magazine and the world changed. Everyone wanted military style semi-auto rifles.

I bought my first AR-15 back in 1970, a M-1 carbine (Inland) back in 1971, and one of the first Ruger mini-14s in 1976.

Wish I had kept them but I also hate starving.

I qualified with AR15 in 1964. Now this was the Air Force but it was a full auto and not known as the M16.

If I remember correctly, the AR-15 was first introduced to the armed forces by General Curtis Lemay for use on Air Force base security. Right back around 1964, I think.

I notice the clips are loaded so some have the first round on the left, some on the right.

Does not this lead to a 7th round stoppage in some Garands?

Or as some have called it...A bang...bang...jam rifle.

I’ve never fired one but it is what I’ve read.

Collect them all! Available calibers that work with the standard AR15 lower receiver.

Wait. Do I understand that ANY brand of the AR class of weapons has a lower that can be paired with any of the aforementioned calibers? So, like, a lower from a .223 can also be used with the upper with a .308 caliber with no major modifications? Wow! So all one would need to make the "conversion" would be the complete upper receiver and of course, the appropriate magazine?

What a concept!

ya know....I have a brace of Garands

my first garand had the infamous 7th round stoppage...it is a DCM(now CMP)garand that I bought from the gummint for $123 in 1981....I tried loading the magazines one way then another to no avail....

what I finaly did was replace two small parts. the bullet guide and follower arm ....and bingo....no stoppages ever since then. now I can load up my clips anyway I like and I can fire that Greek surplus ammo all day long without a hiccup.

***the AR-15 was first introduced to the armed forces by General Curtis Lemay for use on Air Force base security.***

From what I have read, when Hollywood made the movie SEVEN DAYS IN MAY they wanted a futuristic weapon for the military to be carrying. They chose the M-16.

The super duper 5.56MM round falls between the Remington .222 and Rem .222 mag in power.

I have so much fun with the .22 conversion for the AR. Using subsonic Ammo
I can get trigger happy at the range without drawing any attention. All that is
heard mostly is the ejector action, a minor clicking sound. And no ringing in the ears.
The carbon does need to be blown out with .223 or 5.56 after firing though.

I recall reading, about 40 years ago, that the new generation of gun owners would eventually transition from bolt actions to semi-auto detachable magazine fed rifles, because the civilian population always eventually transitioned to what they became familiar with in the military.

The MSM might have delayed this for a decade or two, but it appears that we are finally there.
