The Syrian defense minister killed by a bomb was the in charge of the Baathist/AlQaeda alliance against the USA in Iraq. He was also in charge of Syria's occupation of Lebanon and terrorist attacks against Israel.
Washington imposed sanctions on Shawkat in 2006 on suspicion that he orchestrated the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri and other officials seen as threats to Syrian influence. "Shawkat has been a key architect of Syria's domination of Lebanon, as well as a fundamental contributor to Syria's long-standing policy to foment terrorism against Israel," the U.S. Treasury said at the time. - Syria's shadowy enforcer

During a December 26, 2008 meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki, according to one leaked State Department cable, General Petraeus explained “that the Syrians are playing a dangerous double game” with respect to the Iraqi insurgency. The cable summarizes Petraeus’s comments further: “While professing commitment to security cooperation, [the Syrians] turn a blind eye to AQI terrorist facilitation activity and they aid and abet Iran’s interference in Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank, and elsewhere.” Petraeus pointed the finger of blame directly at Assad and Shawqat, who knew full well what al Qaeda was up to on Syrian soil.

In 2006, the Treasury Department designated Shawkat as a terrorist supporter, noting that he coordinated the activities of several terrorist groups: Hezbollah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). - Blowback in Syria

The logic is simple, but based on Bert’s assumptions, the WMD’s were Russia’s, not Saddam’s so therefore Bush would have been wrong.

If you condone the terrorist bombing of a staff meeting amongst a foreign governments leadership, then you are opening up a pandoras box of counter bombings here within the US and Europe. Stupid is as stupid does.

He played with fire and he got burned. He harbored al-Qaeda and now he got his reward. He's in Hell wondering where are his 72 virgins.

I believe General Sa’ad has claimed that the weapons were moved into Syria with Russian assistance right before the war. It is also believed that the Israelis blew them up in a raid into Syria a couple of years later. And that radioactivity levels at the site are high.

Germans have the best intel in Syria and they have reported that Al Qaeda has been pouring into Syria from Iraq and numerous other countries. They are taking advantage of the chaos the rebels have caused. Which is similar to what they did in Iraq. Took advantage of the chaos that occurred after Saddam fell.

That COULD just be what happens to make Damascus a "ruinous heap" which "ceases to be a city" that the Bible talks about (Isaiah 17:1). This link http://www.trumpetsounds.com/isaiah17.html goes into a lot of detail concerning the nation of Israel and her hostile neighbors and what Almighty God has said WILL happen in the end times. Very interesting.

If one is not lazy to learn history he knows NATO has a long romance with islamists.

Islamic terrorism as is developed by the British in form of Hizb-ut-Tahrir in mid-40s to counter Israel’s influence in Middle East.
US supported that at the very beginning because British pushed an idea that Israel is going to be a Soviet Bloc communist nation.
Brits planned to use this crap to deter Israel as a senior US partner, to deter US ditching future US-Israel alliance in ME and keep colonies.
They taught islamists all that modern terrorist tactics back to the 40s to fight the war Brits couldn’t wage for many reasons.
British agenda proved to be a bullcrap by earlier 50s so they abandoned it.
Later Soviet KGB highjacked most of it’s elements developing Baathism there.
Future Al-Qaeda elements were sitting in a closet for a few decades to come out.

So, at what point do Russians gain ownership?

When the Russians get worried the weapons they 'sold' will be used against Russia.

Yes, Iraq could make variants of the SCUD missiles, and had come up with their own 'chemical' warheads. The biological, however, came from Russia. The nuclear warheads came from Russia. Russia didn't want any type of WMD's found in Iraq that had MADE IN RUSSIA stamped on them, as that would be very embarrassing and violate a few UN treaties.

The repo of the weapons due to money owed was more of an insider joke, or rumor mill 'excuse'. It was true, but it wasn't the primary reason for removing the weapons.

IIRC, no one was killed. One of our units spotted the convoy, and started firing after the convoy refused to stop. They stopped, and one of the convoy personnel had ‘diplomatic’ papers. Quickly, Russian diplomats were on the phone to US diplomats, demanding that the US back off. Due to UN convention, we had to back off.

Our men were not allowed to search the vehicles, so all our troops could do was monitor them.

How many convoys were then allowed to proceed without interference, after that incident, was not made public.

The Rebels might not like a Russian solution to the rebel areas near the naval base.

"Destroy the rebel base."
