Mayor Bloomberg Says Cops Should Go On Strike Until Americans Give Up Their Guns

We've been hearing a lot of that recently. Earlier this year, The New York Times reprinted a Department of Justice press release and slapped this lede on top of it: “As violent crime has decreased across the country, a disturbing trend has emerged: Rising numbers of police officers are being killed.”

Bloomberg and The New York Times are both wrong: In 2008, ten times more civilians regular people were killed by cops than cops were killed by perps. In 2011, 72 cops were shot and killed in the entire U.S.; in L.A. County alone, cops shot and killed 54 suspects the same year--22 percent of those people were unarmed.

As Scott Reeder reported at Reason this morning, "Farmers, ranchers, commercial fishermen, loggers, garbage collectors, truck drivers, construction workers, pilots, steel workers, roofers, and others are far more likely to face death on the jobs than police or firefighters, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics."

And as Choire Sicha wrote earlier this year, "2008 was the ten-year low for police officers being killed, and 2012 is, so far, year-to-date, down 49% from last year." Bloomberg, the commander of "the seventh biggest army in the world" went on to say that "police officers want to go home to their families. And we’re doing everything we can to make their job more difficult, but more importantly, more dangerous, by leaving guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them and letting people who have those guns buy things like armor piercing bullets.’’

Excellent idea!

Make the strike official and PUBLIC.

I guarantee, 24hrs without cops on the street and gun control efforts would be set back to pre-1935 levels. Nothing like an unamed citizen and an off-hook signal on 911 to get things moving.

As long as the strikers are not paid and Bloomberg also loses any taxpayer subsidized security detail. Go for it Bloomy. While they are on strike, those of us with CCW (or not) will carry without concern that any cops will be on duty to arrest us for exercising our 2nd amendment rights. The consequence might actually be a lower level of criminal activity when citizens aren't relying on cops for security. The cops have no duty to protect you. They are restrained from acting until a law has been violated. By that time, the set of events set in motion may have fatal consequences. The cops arrive to clean up after the crime has been committed.

LEO’s on strike? The only way we could tell is if they stop writing speeding tickets.

Bloomberg has been pushing the limits of dictatorial stupidity for years. The people who put this fascist loon in power deserve him.

Old bloomie can kiss my rebel butt. My harmless innocent child was murdered with a 2 ft section of FENCE POST, where is his call for a ban on them?

I CCW..to protect myself from that killer, who made threats to kill any one who testified against him from JAIL...I spent 14.5 yrs keeping his socio-pathic butt in prison. WHAT PART OF SHALL NOT INFRINGE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

I also live in the crime capitol of TN...Memphis, where the nightly news first 10-15 mins is nothing but murder or attempted murder, or shootings.

And doctor mistakes kill more people than guns.

As of yesterday 552 people died in traffic accidents on TN highways this year...where is the car ban hue and cry?

Bloomberg has a platoon of New York’s flatfooted finest carrying full auto weapons to guard “the Nanny”. He isn’t saying he will go unprotected just you peasants.

Wjen exactly did it bevome my role in life to make a cop’s job easier or safer?
It is their job to do as we asked, while operating within the restrictions we set.
