You're right, "cheers" is a silly affectation by academics, like spelling "colour" and "offence" and crossing their sevens to show how oh-so-sophisticated they are.
No wonder a normal American wasn't impressed.

No, crossing 7’s and z’s is not an affectation, at least not in the mathematical and physical sciences: it keeps z’s and 2’s, and 7’s, and > signs clear when writing hastily (and separates 7’s from 1’s which may be written with a serif to avoid having them look like l’s or pipe-signs: | ).

There is nothing wrong with crossing your sevens and your zees when you are in science and engineering. Very easy to look similar to a two without that. I got into the habit when I was in college. BME, MSME.
