NEW YORK (WFAN) – It seems the fate of Joe Paterno’s statue at Penn State has been sealed.
“Am told that Penn State plans to take down the Paterno statue this weekend,” Kim Jones of the NFL Network and WFAN reported via Twitter on Friday.
Paterno, fired by the university last year amid the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, died in January. His legacy was further tarnished by a scathing report released last week by former FBI director Louis Freeh.
The Freeh report accused the former coach and other university officials of “repeatedly” concealing “critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse” in order to avoid bad publicity.
Many have since called for the removal of Paterno’s likeness in front of Beaver Stadium. A banner even flew above Penn State this week with the message, “Take the statue down or we will.”
Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 of 48 counts of sexual abuse against 10 boys, some within PSU’s athletic facilities.
The Paterno family plans to launch its own investigation in the wake of the Freeh report.
“The announcement of the findings by the Freeh Group is yet another shocking turn of events in this crisis,” the family said in a statement Monday. “We are dismayed by, and vehemently disagree with, some of the conclusions and assertions and the process by which they were developed. Mr. Freeh presented his opinions and interpretations as if they were absolute facts. We believe numerous issues in the report, and his commentary, bear further review.
“Our interest has been and remains the uncovering of the truth.”
The comments of so many here are so ignorant as to be worthy of the DU Hall of Fame.
JoPa was a fine man being besmirched by the same liberal trash MSM that so many here lament, but embrace in their current bottom feeding frenzy.
I am ashamed of all of you - JoPa was a great man & Penn St doing this simply greases the skids on what was a fine legacy.

If anyone is to blame for all of this it is the university administration who not only accepted the homosexual lifestyle with open arms, they promoted it with university (i.e. taxpayer and student fee) supported homosexual fairs. With all of this homosexual pressure placed on you, what would you do differently?????
Paterno may have thought he was in a tight-spot just as you describe it. The LGBT students at PSU had run the Lady Lions head basketball coach out of town a while back. Paterno was also keenly aware that Spanier and a minority of the Trustees wanted him to retire as far back as 2 previous contract negotiations. Spanier very much brought the alternative lifestyles to the fore at PSU. I could easily imagine Spanier using this homosexual community against Paterno -- unless Paterno was willing to splash some headlines and go out in a blaze of glory.
Even so, I can't excuse Paterno. And it should be noted that I don't know any of this for a fact. Just speculation on my part having gone to school there.

“The Paterno Family?” Sounds like a crime syndicate. I guess in a perverse way it is!
I'd cut the family a little slack. They just found out that their recently deceased patriarch is alleged to have done some horrible things -- mostly by failing to live-up to his own moral code. They're having a hard time accepting it.
The only family member who might have been in a position to know was son, Jay Paterno -- who was on the coaching staff. But as SOB (Son of Boss) It's possible he was treated like a mushroom & kept out of the loop. Even if Jay got 'glimmers' he likely wouldn't have said anything to his sibblings, and certainly nothing to his mother, Sue Paterno.
On the contrary, I think they should build two Paterno statues identical to the first, line them up and make one cover his eyes, one cover his ears, and one cover his mouth. Then engrave “See no Evil. Hear no Evil. Speak no Evil.” below them.

Sorry to disagree with the second sentence. Greed and avarice destroyed a pipsqueak. Because you can coach a football team successfully, doesn’t make you a “great man.” Therein lies the fallacy in so-called “sports figures.” “Greatness” comes from personal character, not from any ability to teach someone with size 44 coveralls and a size four hat how to throw a ball. Or how to con a university out of a salary that goes well beyond reason. At the end of the day Joe Pa was just another grifter.

There lies the problem. He wasn't coach Joe Blow at Backwater State afraid for his job. Paterno could have took on the sodomites and won. Instead he did little and no follow ups. He had the power to do some good in all of this mess but passed.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. There is ample evidence that Joe Pa knew exactly what was going on and did nothing. He is, therefore a man of no character or principles. The family has to know that this was the case now. If they were class folks, they would be as quiet as they could. Joe Pa “arranged” to renegotiate his contract early so they are all rolling in taxpayers money. They need to just STFU! This is the dogshit theory in action. “The more that they step in it, the worse it will smell.”
First, it was denied in its entirely by the Board of Trustees.
About 1:45 this afternoon, there's a report from a few Trustees that the decision as to the status of the statue is up to the President of Penn State (wouldn't want the backlash to affect the Board members, would they?).
Back in the day My sister was a cop for Penn State. She arrested a football player for some offense and he told my Sister that When Paterno find out she arrested him, she would lose her job.
The next day Joe Paterno called my sister to his office. There was the footballer player. He made this guy apologise to my sister for the trouble he caused and told her if she ever had a problem with any of his guys he would handle it the same way. My Sister was impressed with the way Joe wouldnt try to brush it under the rug.
That was in the late 80s, early 90s. Then he had guts and held his men accountable. I guess it no longer mattered as long as he got his record. My Sister was heartbroken when the whole Sandusky thing broke. Another hero with feet of clay.
JoePa got his record, but sold his soul for it.

I think that the Paterno family will eventually quiet down. Best guess. OTOH, there are legal matters facing the family now (potential lawsuits), so I can imagine that they are being told to take a public position by their lawyers. Time we live in. Everything is driven by the lawyers & the PR-types.
