The FR Canteen is Free Republic's longest running daily thread
specifically designed to provide entertainment and moral support for the military.
The doors have been open since Oct 7 2001,
the day of the start of the war in Afghanistan.
We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.

As we got off the bus at a home for mentally and physically challenged children in Copse, Jamaica, I didnt expect to find a football player. While the teen choir and the other adult chaperones dispersed to find kids to hug, love, and play with, I came upon a young man named William.
Im not sure what Williams medical diagnosis was, but he looked like he probably had cerebral palsy. I had grabbed a football before getting off the bus, so I tossed it gently to William, who dropped it.
But when I picked it up and put it into his hands, he slowly manipulated it until he had it just how he wanted it. Then, leaning back against a railing for balance, William tossed a perfect spiral. For the next 45 minutes, we played toss and catchhe tossed, I caught. William laughed and laughedand stole my heart. On that day he had as much impact on me, Im sure, as I did on him. He taught me that we are all needed as a part of Christs body, the church (1 Cor. 12:20-25).
People often dismiss others who are different from themselves. But it is the Williams of the world who teach us that joy can come when we accept others and respond in compassion. Is there a William in your world who needs you to be his buddy?
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:18-27
I have a nephew in the Marine Corps who is serving his second tour in Afghanistan. Say a prayer for him and all our men and women serving in harm's way on this Independence Day.

If so, you will recognize and very much appreciate the memories of "Coming Home," to "The World."
Mine is especially memorable, though I remember very little of the actual flight as I landed at Travis AFB, CA., on JULY 4th, 1967.
What I do remember is that almost all of my fellow bros on that flight (a mix of Army, USAF and few Marines) including me, wanted so "REAL" Milk (nice and cold) as opposed to any adult beverages we could have had.
I won't go into any details as to the reception I got later in the day when I ventured into downton San Francisco, but suffice it to say, it weren't exacly pretty or much fun.
In fact, though I had planned on spending a few days there, I canceled my Hotel reservation, took a cab to the Airport and waited for the 1st flight out to Detroit with connections to Pontiac MI., where I was going to pick up my brand new GTO.
God Bless our brave Warriors serving in harms way; God Bless all our Vets; and God Bless America.
Happy 4rth, everyone!
Hope it was a good day for you!
Quiet day here, light chores, and then Burgers and Brats on the grill, red bliss tater salad, ice cream sundaes afterward.
I’m full!
LOL
Prayers and thank you to all those who made America free.
SOUP FOR THE TROOPS
WELCOME TO
Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning to our
Military, our Allies, and their families.
Thank you, Ma, for preparing the Canteen for today's activities
Sorry I missed getting to the Canteen yesterday.
Hard to do when hubby is home
plus had major chores to do since none
got done while we were without power.
Hope everyone had a wonderful time and
enjoyed major cookouts and fireworks.
We stayed home and chilled.
I watched Independence Day which
has been a semi-tradition for me.
Saturday will be a cookout day with family.
Not sure how long I'll stay
cause right now they are predicting
103 (without heat index).
~ Today...High 98F. Hot and humid. Heat index near 105F.
Isolated thunderstorms this morning,
then partly cloudy during the afternoon hours.
Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.
~ Tonight...Mostly clear. Humid. Low 76F. Winds light and variable.

A pinch of this...a dash of that...
The body has 70,000 miles of blood vessels.
The heart pumps blood through this labyrinth
and back again once every minute.
The striped skunk can fire its musk stream
accurately for up to 12 feet,
and even farther with a cooperative downwind.
A diamond will not dissolve in acid.
The only thing that can destroy it is intense heat.
There are no penguins at the North Pole.
In fact, there are no penguins anywhere
in the Northern Hemisphere (outside of zoos).
All 17 varieties of the bird are found
below the equator, primarily in the Antarctica.
I've got to make my rounds.
It's getting harder and harder
for me to get to the Canteen.
With the slowness of either FR or the network,
it's taking me longer and longer to post each morning.
As hard as it is for me to do
I think I will shorten my morning post.
Expect changes to start soon.
But, please stay right where you are.
Keep the troops entertained and the Canteen clean...
Cause...if you don't...I'll tell Ma!
Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS
