Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

My Buddy William

July 5, 2012

As we got off the bus at a home for mentally and physically challenged children in Copse, Jamaica, I didn’t expect to find a football player. While the teen choir and the other adult chaperones dispersed to find kids to hug, love, and play with, I came upon a young man named William.

I’m not sure what William’s medical diagnosis was, but he looked like he probably had cerebral palsy. I had grabbed a football before getting off the bus, so I tossed it gently to William, who dropped it.

But when I picked it up and put it into his hands, he slowly manipulated it until he had it just how he wanted it. Then, leaning back against a railing for balance, William tossed a perfect spiral. For the next 45 minutes, we played toss and catch—he tossed, I caught. William laughed and laughed—and stole my heart. On that day he had as much impact on me, I’m sure, as I did on him. He taught me that we are all needed as a part of Christ’s body, the church (1 Cor. 12:20-25).

People often dismiss others who are different from themselves. But it is the Williams of the world who teach us that joy can come when we accept others and respond in compassion. Is there a William in your world who needs you to be his buddy?

Lord, help us to see how much we need each other
in our Christian walk. May we show Your love
to others who are different than us. Give us an
open heart to learn. Amen.
We need one another in order to be who God wants us to be.

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:18-27

The members should have the same care for one another. —1 Corinthians 12:25

Thanks very much, Kathy!

*HUGS*

And thanks very much for tonight's Remembering Out Troops thread!

As elegant as Jefferson's prose was, the Declaration of Independence did not enforce itself. Men, women and boys brought it into effect through service under arms in the Revolutionary War. A gaggle of untrained militia transformed into a strong fighting force that became the United States Army and stood off and ultimately defeated one of the world's Great Powers.

The punishing nadir that Washington endured with his troops at Valley Forge was like the honing of a fine sword in the smithy. What emerged from Valley Forge that Winter, with the help of names like LaFayette, Pulaski, and von Steuben, was a force to be reckoned with.

The men and women of today's U.S. Armed Forces serve in a proud tradition, and they have performed admirably in Iraq and Afghanistan. This old FMF Corpsman couldn't be prouder of the job done by his old outfit in the present conflict under the most draconian ROE's that our guys have ever had to operate under.

Enjoy Freedom? Thank your serving military. Without them, we'd be joining in Mayday celebrations with the Commies instead of celebrating the Glorious Fourth!

A "FREEDOM BIRD!"

Any Nam Vets out there?

If so, you will recognize and very much appreciate the memories of "Coming Home," to "The World."

Mine is especially memorable, though I remember very little of the actual flight as I landed at Travis AFB, CA., on JULY 4th, 1967.

What I do remember is that almost all of my fellow bros on that flight (a mix of Army, USAF and few Marines) including me, wanted so "REAL" Milk (nice and cold) as opposed to any adult beverages we could have had.

I won't go into any details as to the reception I got later in the day when I ventured into downton San Francisco, but suffice it to say, it weren't exacly pretty or much fun.

In fact, though I had planned on spending a few days there, I canceled my Hotel reservation, took a cab to the Airport and waited for the 1st flight out to Detroit with connections to Pontiac MI., where I was going to pick up my brand new GTO.

God Bless our brave Warriors serving in harms way; God Bless all our Vets; and God Bless America.

Got some good rest - didn't venture out of the antique Castle MacNessa four-poster until 11:00 a.m. I am recovering from the infection, but since Tuesday my arthritis has erupted and is affecting new areas. I find myself unable to clench my left hand into a fist - the middle finger is quite stiff. Have some pain in the left wrist - can't wear my watch on that hand now. Lower back is in very bad shape - walking very slowly - have pain in the pelvic girdle and every time I raise the left leg. Seeing a pain doctor soon. Hope he can help.

LOL!

Was some kind of a shock wasn't it?

Oh that heat. Especially during Monsoon season.

Take a (luke warm, or whatever temp the water was from a 50 Gal drum) shower, put on a clean shirt and within moments of stepping outside, one was covered with sweat and your shirt clung to your back.

Of course when not working, that gave us a good excuse (as if we needed one) to head to the closest (Air Conditioned) Watering Hole and have "beaucoup" (Formaldihyde laden) 33 Beer.

Seems like you were just coming, when I was going.

Stay well, stay safe, Welcome Home my brother and God Bless.

Leaving Vietnam was sad for me...the guys in my outfit I was leaving behind...watching it so quickly disappear as we climbed into the clouds...knowing, even then (8/69), how it was going to end. It depressed me for a long time. Then, when the South fell in 75, the same sense came sweeping back in on me.

Alot of that dissipated though when I went back with my daughter in 2000. We really had a great time there, and I found that what I remembered best about the people in the South was still true. Vietnam is slowly but surely coming back together again, even in the North.

If we finally win the War On Terror, we will have ultimately won the Vietnam War. If we don’t...then nothing else will matter.

Thanks for the memory. (Saw Bob Hope too, Chu Lai-Christmas 1968.)

I had already spent a tour in the Philippines, so adjusting to the heat wasn’t that big of a deal. But you’re right: it’s just impossible to stay fresh for more than a minute or two after a shower. Looking back on it, we had to have been really thirsty to drink ‘33.’

Thanks for your service, CVV! My exit from 'Nam was on a stretcher in the cargo bay of a C-130 from Danang to Clark AFB, where I spent a day or two before another flight to USNH Agana, Guam. The surgeons there did some further wound debridement but could not locate the round I was hit with - it had migrated under my shoulder blade. After a day or two in Guam, I was sent back to the World via Clark, Tachikawa, Elmendorf, and Chanute to Andrews AFB outside Washington, DC. The flight back from Clark through Andrews was on a C-141 Starlifter outfitted as a med-evac transport. We were on fairly wide and comfortable cots which folded down from the bulkheads. Lots of nurses and techs on board. I believe it took us about 18 hours to make it from Clark to Andrews.

From Andrews to NNMC Bethesda was a relatively short ride in ambulance and I was home. Mother and girlfriend were waiting at the ER as I was wheeled in. Thus ended my active part in the Vietnam War. Some aspects of that war resound to this day with me.

My bottom line on it is that I am proud to have served with the Fifth Marines as a Platoon Corpsman. I didn't do anything spectacular but I can walk into a room full of Vets and active duty personnel and hold my head up high - I answered the call and served faithfully. 'Nuff said!

Must retire – the 0500 Reveille approaches relentlessly.

The Bugler, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.

Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!

Good night, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!

Godspeed our Troops around the Globe – especially those in harm’s way – by virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to live in Freedom!

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Happy 4th, Sis!! ((((hugs))))

Sounds like your day was just wonderful. Mine was nice. I was
