Syria Masses Tanks On Border With Turkey
The Times of Israel ^ | June 29, 2012

Posted on 06/29/2012 5:52:35 AM PDT by Strategy

The Assad regime has massed approximately 170 tanks near the Turkish border, according to an unconfirmed report on Friday by a general in the Free Syrian Army.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh told Reuters that the tanks are now located 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border, northeast of Aleppo.

"They either want to move toward the border to confront Turkish troops stationed there, or they are planning to attack rebels in towns near the border," al-Sheikh said.

The move comes after Turkey on Thursday sent anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and other fortifications to the border, marking an escalation in hostilities between the two countries.

Compared to today, as bad as you make things out to be, that’s relative calm.

Excellent historical rant!

Russia is glad to see these local wars spring up, and the US or its allies destroying old Russian Tanks and other junk and desposing mean dictators, like Krazy Kadadfy and Saddam.

Then, they can sell more old junk to the newest dictators/buddies they have helped to become the newest dictators/buddies.

Of course the demand for the Russia’s reliable AK47’s and RPGs never stops.

Re gas prices, here in Californicator land the prices in June have been dropping. Even high priced Chevron is below $4/ gallon for regular.

An overthrow in Syria outside of Russia’s control will bring the arab spring to Iran. We should want that.

Also, Gazprom just threatened the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (Turkey and the Azeris) http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2901585/posts We’re talking about the Russian sphere of influence and her control of gas going into Europe.

US party politics, religious convictions and or fobias, or just basic racism should not be made to interfere with the progress of US interests in this extremely energized and volatile region.

Not sure that's a fair judgment. Generals are gamblers and Saddam's bet wasn't that he could resist a US-led main force invasion (he knew couldn't, not with any conceivable array of his resources), but that that there never would be a main-force US-led invasion.

He knew Saudi-led Arab forces forces certainly didn't have the equipment or ability to swing around the open desert -- indeed, the US only was able to do it because of very new capabilities (GPS and the robustness of the Abrams MBT).

Saddam's bet really wasn't a bad bet in the spring of 1990, given that the US had abandoned Vietnam less than 15 years earlier, and had only been willing to fight proxy wars since then (in Latin America, Afghanistant, etc.) It was far from certain that the Saudis would want an invasion, that Bush Sr. and Thatcher would agree to do it, that Gorbachev, Kohl, and Mitterand would tolerate it, and that the US Congress would go along. That every one of those pieces came together (and the US Congress by a quite narrow vote, recall), was quite unlikely.

Good to hear from you again.

I had a couple of older cousins and some older friends in the Korean War, and they had nothing but praise for the Turks in that war.

Keep us posted with what you know.

My wife’s niece was in Turkey last week for a wedding, and she and her husband are back to their assignment in Africa.

They loved Turkey and the positive treatment from the Turks they met and talked to during the week.

You. Just you. Yeah, whatever. I yet to say anything to you, wtc911, that you didn’t rubbish in some way, and you’re that way with just about everybody else too. I don’t think I’ll have much more to say to such a thoroughly disagreeable person.

How’s that for relative calm. I’m glad you have such an easy to remember nick: wtc911 = jerk.

The “you” I used was for the casual reader who might fret over a fracas between Muslims....as far as I am concerned they can butcher each other....

Bizaar post old timer. We have "ears" in Turkey, to watch for Russian ICMB's. We have troops in Turkey. We have nukes in Turkey. We have bases in Turkey. We have ports in Turkey. Are you really so stupid as to believe the assinine crap you post?

Bizarre you might think. They, in the end, are not our friends. Just a matter of convenience. Ruling governments in this area can change as we have seen in the last months/year at the drop of a hat. Islam is Islam, and alliances with infidels do not matter in the end. We are there for their convenience. When that changes, they will rejoin their brothers on the world front.

They, in the end, are not our friends

Sorry. My post was harsher than I intended. Old FRiend.....I've worked with the Turks. They are some of the best people on Earth. They are loyal and friendly. They value education, a Turk seargent I worked with had a degree in Finite Analysis. Most of them are Muslim, so what, as was explained to me, by a Master Seargent....who was laughing I might add "We're all Musilms because that is what is recorded on your birth certificate, and there isn't anyway to change it without lengthy legal time and money".

I was with the Turks when they went to Greece with their F-16's for joint excercises....the Ouzo and Raki flowed freely...and both militaries acted like they had found long lost brothers.

The Turks have and still do host the Israeli's, though toned down now. We are not talking about a bunch of tribal morons that live in the hills and take pot shots at Americans like in Afganistan. We are talking about a first world, modern country, with a a standing army only second to the US in NATO. Syria will be wearing their ass for a hat if they screw with the Turks.......and Assad knows it.....

Understood. I spoke only from my own history. In 1971 I was at Maguire AFB trying to hitch a ride back to my unit at Lajes. No US units would take me (going back early). Finally a foreign C130 crew gladly took me. Best US friends, ever or so it seemed. It was an Iranian crew who’d just picked up a new C130. We all know how this story ended.

Good news.

When an Islamofascist masses his Russian Tanks, he creates a vast target of opportunity.

In the past, masses of Russian Tanks have been been turned into twisted masses of rusting scrap metal and often a violent end for the Islamofacists sending the tankers to a harsh end with no virgins waiting for them.

How long while the Assad mass murdering serial killers last after their tanks and airforce are destoyed?
