They were both far superior to Romney. The problem is that Herman Cain had the early mojo, and he was the one with the bold ideas, and so we began to expect that. Newt had the full package, but conservatives would not rally around him because of his baggage and the coordinated firebombing from not just Mitt Romney, but from the “conservative” GOPe media. Santorum was selling his whole campaign on God, but lacked the real plans that could unify people totally behind him. His record simply didn’t match up with his rhetoric, and people could sense that.

Palin’s usefulness would have been at this point to speak truth to power and pick a candidate for conservatives to rally behind. While she gave little signals here or there that she supported Newt, she did this all in as coy a way as possible. Even when she admitted to voting for Newt, she rendered it useless by not admitting this BEFORE the vote, and afterwards she even made it sound like another state specific endorsement.

A lot of people here keep looking for ways to imagine that Palin has these big plans or is doing this or that behind the scenes. As far as I could see, she was pretty much MIA during the entire primary process. Of all the interviews I saw, the vast majority of them were just her fulfilling her role as a commentator... not laying down the framework of some strategy or one woman campaign.

So as a result, with the accumulated lies pushed by Romney and his supporters, as well as his supporters in the media, with even guys like Rush Limbaugh remaining silent and doing just about nothing to counteract it, Santorum sucked up what remaining energy there was but just couldn’t explain how, besides being God’s candidate, he was better than Mitt Romney, and promptly he quit the fight. At that point, the media narrative became that Romney had already won, and no more discussion was allowed of any other remaining candidate.

The media, honestly, controlled this election from the beginning. Each and every one of their memes came out accurate in the end.

My infatuation with Sarah took a dive when she chose not to enter the fray.

I didn’t see this interview so I can’t be sure if it was as odd as characterized by you, but, if so, my respect for her lessens a bit more.

She needs to get fully on board.

I’ve seen a few people on this forum lately who share your sentiment about Perry having been our best candidate.

I was totally on board for Perry, but he was crucified on this forum and it was allowed to happen.

Looking backwards, Perry may have been the best person that actually ran.

But if you remember, when Perry launched his campaign Palin came out practically the next day with her critique of "crony capitalism", as if to say "that's what this guy is all about".

I agree with you that Perry was probably the best we had (though definitely not as a campaigner). But you are way off if you think Palin saw it that way. Palin made some big, big mistakes in 2011... after doing some great things in 2010. It was a big downfall for her, in my opinion.

Palin did not play coy in her strong support for Newt Gingrich, she was very clear, and even had Todd do a formal endorsement as she did repeated mini-endorsements at opportune times to maximize the effect for Gingrich. None of us were in doubt of who Palin supported in the primary.

Do you know a date when this "strong support for Newt" became public. My memory of it was long after Florida, ie way, way too late.

But I could be wrong. Please correct me if I am.

You are wrong! Perry entered the race on Aug 13......Palins speech in crony capitalism was on Sept 3 which she was advertising for well over a month and the kind of person she was talking about its not enought to just replacing Obama with “just changing up the uniform” fitted Romney not Perry. In fact right after the speech a reporter ask her if she was talking about Perry and she said that she wish all candidates would reject crony capitalism but many said that she was pointing to the establishment and Romney at that time.

Perry may have officially entered the race Aug 13 but I clearly remember he was big in the news the day before her speech. Maybe his highest-ever poll number to date came out.

I watched her on Fox news and she was purposely and obviously unclear about who she was talking about regarding crony capitalism. She may have “clarified” later, but that was after her initial clear condemnation of everyone, with the timing pointing dead-center at Perry.

That time was a golden opportunity for her to endorse (or at least say something strongly positive about) Perry and she clearly and obviously did not. Which is her right. I’m not saying she owed Perry anything. But please don’t change history. She most definitely did nothing to help Perry and at least allowed the impression to be out there that she was dumping on Perry.

Certainly that’s the way it was perceived here in FR, especially by the Perry bashers. But even by the Perry boosters (like myself). I was glum over her “crony capitalism” and her implication that Perry was her target, and I was not alone, and she did NOTHING to set the record straight.

Palin has done great things. 2010 was a great year for her.

But she sucked eggs in 2011. Sorry, she’s not the female Jesus.

Sarah Palin came as close as she’s come to a full-out endorsement, saying Tuesday that she’d vote for Newt Gingrich in the South Carolina primary in order “to keep this thing going.” (see video below)

The former Alaska governor’s latest wink and nod at the former House speaker comes just weeks after her husband, former “First Dude” Todd Palin, gave his more explicit support.

Palin told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity Tuesday that Gingrich won the Monday debate.

“Newt came out just like South Carolina’s own Smokin’ Joe Frazier. He came out there swinging’, talking about work, talking about jobs and work ethic, and how government needs to get out of the way in order for all Americans to have a sense of opportunity to work. And I think that’s what a lot of voters have been craving to hear,” she said.

Palin said she was happy to see the remaining GOP candidates continue to mix it up in the televised forums. “Because iron sharpens iron. Steel sharpens steel. These guys are getting better in their debates. They’re getting more concise. They’re getting more grounded in what their beliefs are and articulating what their ideas are to get the country back on the right track.”

She praised all of the candidates’ performances Monday save two — Ron Paul and, notably, Mitt Romney.

When asked if she was ready to make a public endorsement, Palin said she would only say what she would do if she were a South Carolina voter.

“I’d vote for Newt and I would want this to continue. More debates. More vetting of candidates. Because we know the mistake made in our country four years ago was having a candidate that was not vetted to the degree that he should have been,” she said.

I was never at any point for Perry. I thought his best day was when he gave his dropping out speech.

I just meant looking back at the folks that actually ran, Perry would have gotten my vote if there was such a thing as a redo, speaking just of the clowns that actually ran.

Bachmann was a fruitcake,with Santorum I could never get past his numerous anti Palin comments.

I know full well what Sarah said at every point in the campaign btw, she was still considering running herself at that point. Bachmann should never have run or Perry either, Bachmann did more harm than good, I wish her well in Sweden.

Sarah was smarter than any of us, I believe she figured that most Americans are to fickle, they will turn on you just as fast as they will support you, look no further than the many palin supporters that trashed her after she announced she would not run.

Again if I had a redo of just the folks that actually ran, Perry would have gotten my vote, was probably the most genuine of the folks that actually ran.
