More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts. They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects. They are the resisters.

I don’t have it either—its nothing but a huge tracking device.
“Resistance is futile”
Darth Vader
My twins have an account but I have no desire whatsoever for one for myself.
Why is this news? Some people use FaceBook, some people don’t - so what.
Yes, its the SECOND LARGEST tracking device on the face of the Earth.
My Mom keeps hounding me to joining Facebook, but I refuse. She hates that and is always saying what this person or that person posted on their FB page. Sorry, I’m not biting.
Ann Barnhardt called Facebook a “a giant self-service surveillance net.” I agree. “They” already know enough about us as it is without our giving them even more help.
I agree.
I don’t do Facebook either.
FWIW, Trend Micro AVG anti virus now has added a do not track feature. Facebook and Google analytic trackers are on nearly every site, including this one.
Hasn’t FB been complicit in China’s oppression of political dissent?
I saw that recently when I renewed my AVG subscription. There's tracking everywhere. Nothing is hidden.
Call me paranoid if you must, but I see this as the first step of a campaign to paint those of us who don't submit to "voluntary" surveillance of our online activity as "suspicious" and "secretive."
Good for you.
I love these threads because I thought that - other than a few Amazoian Rain Forest tribesmen - I was the only person in the world not on Facebook.
I have a life. I don't need to share it with everyone, nor do I need to live vicariously through other people's lives on the computer.
Good for you.

If others want to, that's fine. Facebook just isn't for me.
I’m not sure what you’re asking, but you can’t use Facebook in China. It’s blocked.
Facebook is just a passing fad.
Because you can’t use facebook and credibly make an argument about the importance of individual privacy. It would be like bringing a prime rib dip to a PETA rally.
Google is naked about saying, “Whatever you send us is ours” and then makes it so the ONLY way you can sync an Android is with their Google Docs Suite.
This is where the money is for them. If you hold out, well, ‘it doesn’t fit the plan’.
Nope. Heavens no! Just chalk me up as a Facebook Denier. As far as I'm concerned, FB doesn't even exist and never has.
And BTW, shouldn't the term be spelled as resistor, with an o instead of with an e? Inquiring minds need to know.
What’s a facebook?
You’re not the only one, believe me. I have friends who tell me I don’t know what I’m missing. I tell them they don’t know what they’re missing on Free Republic, LOL.
I knew for sure I’d never do Facebook when I heard the quote from Mark Zuckerberg that people were crazy to trust him with their personal information.
I just installed Do Not Track about three days ago and already have over 1,500 blocks! It is absolutely breath taking to realize the amount of information that has already been gleaned and cataloged and given to God knows who about my personal like and dislikes, where I go on the net and comments I made! I now have no expectation of privacy at all, anywhere. But at least I know who’s been watching me.
Does anyone know exactly how to shut down an account? I thought I had shut mine done then my sister told me someone had posted something to me.
On another note, I still believe all these large internet companies are government owned and operated, including the one I use ....Yahoo. They say they make money on advertising. I’ve never known anyone who said they bought something from an ad they saw on Facebood or Google or Yahoo. I know I haven’t. I don’t even look at them.
No facebook for me! Anyone I want to chat with already knows who and where I am.
Bingo...
and you can never delete the information you have given them.
YOU are their product...
It’s the “machine” built by Mr. Finch. When your number comes up, they’ll find you. The TV show is more real than we’d like to admit.
I.P.O.
Yes if you don’t use FB then you will end up on the STRANGE list... I’m joking but some jobs may not want to hire you if you don’t have FB.

What does this mean? I have trend micro and it certainly is not the cookie protector that norton on the old windows was. I cannot really stop any cookies withit on windows 7. I am contantly emptying out my cache.
“I will... I will not go to Second Level.
No!
I will... I will not go to Second Level with you!
I will... No!
I will not be one mind with you!”

Facebook is a precursor to the implementation of the mark of the beast! How else will they know everything about you?
Facebook is just a passing fad.

Yes, the application called Facebook will not last forever. Social networking, the concept behind apps like Myspace and Facebook, will not go away.
Like it or not, you’re kind of doing it now, right here on FreeRepublic.
“I thought that - other than a few Amazoian Rain Forest tribesmen - I was the only person in the world not on Facebook.”
Agree totally. I couldn’t care less about Facebook; I cherish my privacy and can’t imagine checking in to see every little boring detail of what other people are doing throughout their day. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
What’s a “Facebook”?
Good for you. Of course if you were serious about such you would know that surfing the net and using a cell phone gives out more private info than just about anything you do.
Install peer block its an eye opener!
If I want to "network", I'll do it at FR where you can have intelligent (mostly) debate/dialogue.
I was on facebook for a little while but more than half the people who friended me, some from college and high school days were Bleeding Heart Liberals, I couldn’t take it or them, and I didn’t want to say something I know I would regret so I deactivated and never went back.
Count me in as a proud resister to Big Brother.
Just like MySpace and all the others that have been and gone. FB will one day bite the dust. I know several 20-somethings who signed up as teens but have now outgrown it and rarely check on their accounts.
Never had the desire to have an account. The second they come out with Assbook, I’ll be a charter member.
Never got sucked in and have no desire to have a page.
Only problem is that my local news channel website requires FB to post comments. Not that I need to post there, but it was amusing to put up comments that could be taken in many different ways.
No facebook account here. Won’t be gettin’ one, either...
With all the dirt he knows on people Mark Zuckerberg might become the first Jewish President of the USSA, Putin style... for life.
FB keeps sending me notes that my account is deactivated and I need to "update" their files (I just used a shell email and left minimal info). Just for grins I checked it out again and now they want my cell or land line number to "make sure I was a real person".
On top of all that's been said, we have Nine Major Ways Criminals Use Facebook
I know that FB claims this, but I'm having a hard time believing it.

I think the cat is out of the bag regarding any expectation of privacy in this country, especially on the internet. Your information is readily available via local and state government records like real estate taxes, etc.
Heh, heh, from FB to Google (gmail)? Yeesh. Anything Google is flypaper as well. Yeh, I know, they don’t read your email...or the transactions surrounding the generation and/or communication thereof...or do they.
This is what we're talking about: AVG Do Not Track
It is part of the latest version of AVG antivirus software.
