As leader of the free world President Obama will be used to making speeches to millions of people around the globe.
So he might have felt the occasion was a little beneath him yesterday when he stopped off in Reno, Nevada, to deliver an address outside a couple's garage.

They covered the people’s lawn or kept the ‘audience’ at a distance from him, even though they would have all needed to be vetted.
He thinks talking to the people’s neighbors via a mic with them standing across the street is folksy or something?
Do they have cooties?

If ever there was a pre-made SNL sketch, this was one. 3am, noise heard, hubbie checks driveway. “It’s OK, honey, it was just Obama setting up his podium again.” There’s now a Twitter hash #ButObamasInMyDriveway.
I can’t help but wonder if that flack who came up with the “reconnecting with ordinary Americans” line understands that it’s an admission.
Yeah, I can just see me going over to a friend’s neighborhood in order to get a good view of the Preezy or whatever Baraka calls himself these days. So, I get there, am strip searched, and I get to listen to him behind a barrier and on a mic. I’d have a closer view on TV.
Years ago, I was front and center, 10 feet from a Presidential candidate. Just to listen. I also went and tried to listen to the Toon once, but I got tired of standing and waiting after almost 2 hours, even though I was about 25 feet, stage right. What a prima donna, that Toon.
This takes donna to a whole ‘nuther level.
That idiot can’t even pass gas without standing at a podium. I guess that is his “tactical” podium. What a dipstick.
Well at least his team had people come in and touch up paint jobs, mow lawns and fix up landscaping. I wonder what they had to pay the neighbors to stand there for the photo op?

They accidentally set up a forced perspective - same thing used in the Lord of the Rings trillogy to make normal (OK, a little short) actors look like hobbits.

In 2000, I saw George Bush speak from the back of a train. After the speech, I walked up the track a ways, figuring he’d be inside schmoozing with the bigwigs by then. The departing train pulled by, and W was standing on the little balcony at the rear of the last car, accompanied by one security guy. He made eye contact with everyone along the way, and acknowledged each of us. I got a thumbs up. Having worked for a Clintonista, I was struck by the difference between a politician who sees a crowd as a faceless group of adoring fans that he’s entitled to by right, and a politician who sees each one as an individual human being. The SS would still have wanded each of the Reno neighbors, but Bush probably would have shown up with a tub of beer and tailgated with them for an hour.
This was in Nevada, right? There is the Beltway, and there is the driveway. And what happens in the driveway stays in the driveway.
Wow, the neighbors were lined up one deep.
Seeing this headline, I would have bet right of the bat it was from the Mail.
Gimmicks, distractions and symbolism over substance.
