DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) The U.S. Navy said Monday it has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf region amid rising tensions with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

The deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along with the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group marks one of the few times the Navy has had two aircraft carriers operating in waters near the Persian Gulf, said Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet.
The two carriers will support the American military operations in Afghanistan and anti-piracy efforts off Somalia's coast and in the Gulf of Aden, she said.

The unthinkable would be loosing one or both of our great ships and crews. I am nervous and praying for our military.
If Iran successfully sunk both ships then Obama would be forced to wage war on Iran or lose the election.
Meaning I expect it would be a bad day to be in Tehran.
I really hate having our big ships in that Gulf.
that would be series.
But, but we all know only too well by now that islam is a pissful reelijun! There are only pissful pipple over there in that part of the world, right?
It does seem unthinkable, but history is filled with the unthinkable. I am know our men and women will be on alert. I hope it is a quick and uneventful deployment.
I really don’t like Obama.
With two carriers in the Gulf it should not be hard to generate a provocation. If Obama strikes Iran, one could expect the polls to swing wildly in his favor as Americans typically rally to the flag and to their President.
In a stroke he will convert public opinion to his cause and eliminate his liabilities for astronomical gasoline prices.
It is possible that the Obama administration is leaking against Israel's presence in the neighboring country (whose name escapes me) because he wants to control timing and leave himself free to order such a strike in late summer.
All of this is rank speculation on my part.
I know. I need to give up on posting. I am getting sloppier by the day.
A vacation might help.
“The deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along with the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group marks one of the few times the Navy has had two aircraft carriers operating in waters near the Persian Gulf, said Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet.”
Say what? This is completely false.
don’t forget hughes.
Day old news isn’t breaking news. The destination has been known since the boat left port in March.
This is a planned deployment for the Enterprise IIRC. In fact, I believe it’s the Enterprise’s last deployment before her decommissioning.

I think it is has more weight than speculation.
Democrats have shown that they believe that the military and war is only for political gain at home. They attack Republicans for using the military in legitimate causes, then they turn around and use it in unnecessary causes to try to bolster their polls.
I suspect it won’t work this time. America is war weary, and needs a break. If Obama gets us into a big war with Iran, it might backfire. If it grows into a war with Russia and China, it won’t even matter.
I wish we had an adult administration. Bush spent way too much money, but I felt comfortable with him in these situations. With Obama, I am terrified.
Sorry, I saw it on the site that must not be named, but starts with D and has report in the name, and I saw it on another site. They were acting like this was breaking news.
I searched FreeRepublic for carrier in title and didn’t see it, so I did. It seems pretty important.
That was what I was going to say, but I didn’t want to seem to flippant.
7 Days in May. Many in D.C. are looking at this time frame for military action.
With boots on the ground, even confined to the area around straits, we have the honor and patriotism of the country invested. He can argue that he is fighting to keep gasoline prices down.
Obama's trick will be to time the action precisely so that his wave of support crests on November 3. After that, he need not involve us in a war in which he has no interest in winning much less waging. He wants countries like Iran to be counterpoints to the world's sole remaining superpower so he is really indifferent to Iran getting the bomb. Troops would be easy to withdraw from that place and the long war avoided.
All else aside, that’s a beautiful picture of a very impressive ship. It makes me proud that it’s ours.
Take the rest of the day off.
It sure is.

No worries. That won't happen.
Iran does not have the necessary assets to sink a Carrier.
The French also have their carrier Charles de Gaulle there as well.
Big E’s last cruise. She’s headed for decommissioning afterwards.
Which is it? The Iran situation or Afghaiscrap and Somlia pirates? Plus, it's not the first time we've had two carrier groups deployed to the Persian Gulf region. Typical of the Associated Press to convolute things.
Oops, my mind saw the word first for the word few.
It's likely both ships will operate in the Arabian Sea...near the mouth of the Persian Gulf.
Two things:
1) It’s surprisingly hard to sink ships, even harder to sink aircraft carriers (because they are mostly air), and harder to sink big ships.
Despite some taking enormous damage, the US did not lose a fleet carrier in World War II after 1942.
Thus a US CVN would be INCREDIBLY hard to actually sink; would likely take either many, many large-diameter torpedo hits (such as Russian 650mm) or a fire that gets out of control. Even a fire that gets out of control would likely leave a floating, burned out hulk. And US damage control has really become a science.
Thus people need to get the “sink” idea out of their heads.
On the other hand, it’s VERY easy to put a CVN out of operation. You need a largely undamaged flight deck, a ship that’s not on fire, and enough forward speed for launches. Even single missiles, torpedoes, mines, or suicide boats are capable of doing enough damage to damage the flight deck, start a fire, or take out a propeller. A CVN that can’t conduct flight ops is a worthless piece of metal.
2) The Iranians almost certainly can’t sink a CVN, but they have hundred to thousands of weapons that could damage a CVN long enough to disrupt flight operations, IF they made it through the Strike Group defenses. Ignore the “AEGIS/CIWS ROOOLZ!” people because nobody has actually EVER launched a many-missile attack against any naval warship in combat. Predicting the outcome of things that have never happened before is perilous.
Agreed. Most people either don't know or tend to forget that big decks travel with quite an array of support ships and even a sub or two. Iran aircraft would be deaded before they could ever get close to locking on. An aircraft carrier is much like a ground forward operating base that is surrounded by defense measures.
As they usually do.

But the Willie Dee tried......http://www.ussiowa.org/general/html/willie_d.htm
Yeah but a silly little rubber boat almost took out the USS Cole
I wouldn’t be so sure. Those are confined waters, and ever since the invasion of Iraq, Iran has been preparing for a potential showdown against the US. The large number of anti-ship missiles that Iran posses, both launched from shore or light-attack craft could pose a threat to a carrier group and that’s without adding in other threats like diesel-electric submarines or mines. There haven’t exactly been very many examples of naval warfare in the last couple of decades, and what few exist have often been fragmentary at best. A carrier’s escorts being capable of successfully intercepting a mass attack by modern anti-ship missiles is not something that can be taken for granted.
if God forbid a couple of IIAF F-4’s were to powerdive into
Big E’s flightdeck with AP bombs aboard and survive long enough to strike it, E could sink.
They know that USN are alert to civil air fraffic and
may have fixed some of their phantoms to squak civil aircraft idents to blend in with the Gulf air traffic.
Obama will send us to war with Iran and we WILL win and the victory parade will be in late October 2012.
After the november elections he will have all the wiggle room too give the country to the Moslem Brotherhood. They will be allowed to have nukes.

I was just thinking - if the Iranians attack with “speed boats” the Big E could just turn on the horse power and swamp them all with it’s wake - while they were still in harbor!
There are some great stories of the Big E doing speed trials off of San Diego and swamping boats in harbor....
I agree. What was that one war game scenario that was done where the US lost, because the guy playing the part of the enemy attacked with numerous small vessels? When the Navy saw that they lost, they changed the rules of the game. I also would not put it past any of the players in this global chess game to do whatever it would take to get the US to attack Iran.
This scares me to death. Our nephew is on the Enterprise.
I wonder if he’ll do it?/s
Azerbajian ??
But they won’t be IN the Gulf.
Should that unthinkable happen, Tehran ought be nothing but a smoldering heap.
The price for attacking an Aircraft Carrier with national assets is far too severe for any nation to contemplate.
And when operating 300miles out, suicide to attempt.
I'm thinking many folks are not aware how dominant the USN is at sea. We are unchallenged outside the littorals. If you see a Carrier in the Gulf, you can bet we do not intend to attack. And, you can bet we have sufficient assets in the region to effect terrible retribution.
I hear things have changed, but the price of a Carrier used to be total nuclear war. You can bet it's still extreme.
“Let us proceed from a assumption easy to make, that Obama will proceed as cynically as Macchiavelli.”
Are you saying that Obama outed the Israeli plan so that he could implement his own plan to attack Iran?
“He can argue that he is fighting to keep gasoline prices down.”
This attack is in response to high gas prices?
Really... is that what you believe?
Getting older every day as well right?
iPads, auto correct in most browsers make it easy to mess up.
If people can read tweets then they can overlook a few mistypes. Check this out.

Translation: According to research by the Linguistic Department at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole.
Someone’s trying to make a point by making the Big “E’s” move extra news worthy. It’s last cruise was announced weeks ago so maybe there’s sentiment to give Her one last show? She’ll retire after this deployment. And don’t worry about the Big “E”-—after all she survived McCain and his buddies who tried to sink her off Oahu about 1968-—She pulled into Pearl where I helped put Her back in shape and as a side note she’s the last remaining US Navy ship that I actually worked on that’s still in service——so I’m a touch sentimental about the old rocket sled.
More to the point-—there already was two US carriers in the Gulf area before Enterprise got there-—Abe and Vinson. And according to my wall map where I keep track of carrier groups, the Bush is still in the Mediteranean area and that makes FOUR within a night’s ride of Immanutjob’s digs. Granted the Navy fails to keep me posted on its every move but my own Big Weegee Board works pretty good.
Finally, I’ve said for years that if more than two carrier groups wind up in the Gulf at the same time, as Saddam found out, then it’s extremely likely someone is going to get a really Excedreen Headache number 9. To mismangle General Patton if your Mojo is working good you need to sent up a “good mission “ prayer for our Fleet sailors in the ME. This whole Iran thing might be out of Obamuzzie’s hands.
what are those two ships tied up next to the carrier?
“With Obama, I am terrified.”
You and a couple of hundred million other Americans, FA.
With what technology the Iranians are going to sink any of our naval ships? We are like 50 years ahead of them in military technology None the less the Iranian terrorist regime must be destroyed This cancer has been causing a lot of troubles for us and the Middle East since 1979
