Aren’t pilots not supposed to eject until they know this won’t happen?

Only to the limits of what's humanly possible. If there is massive mechanical failure, and the craft is totally unresponsive, they can't do anything.

The next best thing is eject at the last possible second. Many pilots have ejected a second too late, and also died.

Agree 110%. Gas turbine mechanical failures are normally rapid and catastrophic. From one comment on the va beach local news, someone said the plane was flying low over 264 and trailing smoke. That tells me that the compressor section of that turbine ate itself and the nozzle configuration seems to support that the pilots attempted to gain more speed and altitude by putting the starboard throttles to the firewall.

God bless these guys, they did the best they could.

Not a good, nor an honored way, to ditch your fighter plane!

Okay, Chuck Yeager, what would you have done? Please do enlighten us and feel free to add the perspective from which you speak.

If the reports of no fatalities and few injuries holds true, then I think we can all let out a deep breath on this one. I was visiting my aunt in Indiana back in 1987 when an A-7 crashed into a Indianapolis hotel. Not everyone was so lucky that day.

With a fire like some of the photos was showing I’m surprised there aren’t more seriously burned. Hopefully all will be okay and can recover.

. People forget this area was not densely populated when the bases were being built

How right you are. I lived there from 1958 until 1998. The growth that took place during that time was rapid and sustained. As a kid growing up there in the late 50's and early 60's it seemed I knew just about eveybody. It was a small beach community on the coast and farmland inland. Oceana was surrounded by open land and farms and timber for miles around back then. But not anymore.

Well then strap you butt in the cockpit and do better. Once control is lost get out. From several accounts from Freepers who likely know 1000% more than you the craft no control was possible. The first hand information the Pilots can give about the crash may save many more future lives. But they can’t do that if they die in vain trying to save a craft that can not be controlled. BTW Captains don’t go down with the ship either.

Idiot...you weren't flying it...I tend to think because they're our guys, they did more than what's possible to avoid doing just that.

The people who saw this plane said something was wrong early after takeoff....another man said the wing seperated from the plane.

They said the pilots came as close to ejecting as possible before going down with the plane.

Emergency management is on the scene in full force to get people into living quarters...large scale operation to have teams bring relif to those who are without homes etc. Currently shelter for these elderly citizens is the concern aside from continuing checking the buildings....

Yesterday, a 20 year old VB male was murdered as he skateboarded down the street. Someone drove up, got out of the car, and shot him. Then the shooter got back in the car and drove away. The name of the victim is Ameer Kareem Hamid Baksh.

My uncle owned a Larkspur 66 service station somewhere near Trasmore in the late 60's early to mid 70's. He also Captained a LST out of the Amphib Base. I was homeported in NORVA 77-80. I went back there about 8 years ago and didn't recognize much. The old Boardwalk on VA beach was gone :>{

You are correct. Oddly, he did exactly the same as we are seeing here - one engine in full afterburner mode, one throttled way back to keep the plane almost steady.

Smart pilot, and savvy too. Pity he couldn’t have kept in the air for another 5 minutes.

Nope. A Navy jet goes down right after take-off with witnesses describing the right wing having flames underneath. (I think that’s what we heard but I could have misunderstood.) Yesterday, a Persian/Muslim guy was murdered a few miles away. Probably unrelated.

I heard that of those, two had been released after being treated for smoke inhalation. The two pilots were reported in good shape, although one was initially shook up and appeared disoriented. A police officer was injured at the crash site and was admitted for observation and another person had collapsed at the scene and was being held overnight. None of these cases were considered life threatening.

Glory be to God.
