Saying that Mitt Romney may not be able to "grind his way toward the nomination" despite a huge fundraising advantage, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told NPR today that he sees no reason to exit the Republican presidential race and that there's a chance of a new contender emerging at the party's convention in August.
"I'm not so sure you wouldn't get a series of brand new players" stepping forward during a brokered convention, he told Morning Edition co-host Steve Inskeep.
Or, he said, he might emerge as the convention's choice. Gingrich said he expects to end the primary season with the third most delegates with Romney at No. 1 and Rick Santorum at No. 2.
Gingrich also repeated criticisms he has leveled at Romney throughout the campaign. First, that "conservative voters are deeply worried about Gov. Romney." Second, that if the former Massachusetts governor is heavily outspending his GOP rivals and "is barely winning" in the battle for the nomination, there's "no reason to think Romney is going to with the general election" against President Obama.
More from the interview is due on Thursday's broadcast of the show. We'll add the as-broadcast version of Steve's conversation with the former House speaker to the top of this post after it airs. Click here to find an NPR station that broadcasts or streams the show.
That pic of Newt is hilarious! He and Santorum are having a lot of fun with those toys. Fox is not enjoying the ridicule and says they look desperate. I guess Fox thinks we are not aware they are in the tank for Romney. I remember Newt saying at the very start of this campaign that more people may jump in. He knows something...
Neither Santorum nor Romney has what it will take to fix the mess we're in and is bulletproof enough to handle the withering incoming fire such a reformer will have to endure to save the Republic. Gingrich does have what it takes and is bulletproof enough.
I also grow more convinced by the day I can't, in good conscience, vote for Romney.
I've voted for every GOP presidential candidate since I've been of voting age, but I'll break my streak if Romney is the nominee.
The Democrats are getting seriously together and organized. Look at Obama’s web site. It blows all of ours away combined.
An RNC official acknowledged that on later rounds of voting, it would be possible for a motion to be made to nominate a candidate who did not qualify on previous rounds. Essentially, the nomination-for-the-nomination process begins anew. At that point, a new candidate could demonstrate plurality support from five states and qualify.
While he would not have to "win" five states, he would have to show that he had the support of five state to get nominated to the second or subsequent rounds. Not. Gonna. Happen. The GOP-E wants Mitwit and you shall have Mitwit. Your opinion means squat to them.
I’ve been a Republican since, 1985, but I won’t vote for Romney either. Third Party for the 1st time in my life.
What is the historical precedence for such an event? None. Since the primary system, there has never been a second ballot at the Republican convention. Won’t happen this time either.
Get your delegates now while their available.
I've been thinking this for some time as well. I hope its true and not just wishful thinking on my part.
Gingrich/Palin.
Everywhere Mitt's won, the turnout has been down. He's viciously attacking anyone who polls well, using his money advantage (and his nastiness) and is angering the voters.
One thing for sure, it matters that you win.
But even more importantly than that, it matters HOW you win.
John Paulson, the head of (and huge contributor to) Romney’s SuperPac has done more to destroy the Republican’s chances this year than David Axelrod.
Who is Mitt’s wonderful sugar daddy? According to Wikipedia,
“Paulson became a billionaire by short-selling subprime mortgages in 2007, and made $3.5 billion that year. In 2010, he beat a hedge-fund record by making nearly $5 billion.”
How can it go to a second ballot if only Mitt and Rick are eligible on the first ballot? Unless delegates abstain from voting, having only 2 eligible candidates means one will get the majority.
Newt would have to win the support of delegates through “backroom” deals. Problem is the lion’s share of the delegates are probably political climbers and party loyalists who will switch to Romney if they switch to anyone. News reports already said Pennsylvania’s delegates are basically all controlled by the party and might back Romney even if Santorum wins the Pennsylvania vote. And Ron Paul is the only person who has been working on a grass-roots strategy for years to plant his own loyalists in as delegates.
So, no, this ain’t going to happen, unless Romney does something so horrible that it completely turns off the GOP elite as well as the rank-and-file.
The GOP needs an enema.
And those are not the only states with unbound delegates. There are others including Colorado.
Newt has always been brutally honest and never hung with the RINO group think crowd of the party except when he drug them kicking and screaming by the hair of their head to the historic turn of Congress in 1994.
The RINOS hated his Contract With America because it trimmed their sails on budget spending and delayed their wrangling for plum committees, political expediency and out of the lets-just-cave mentality. He made them finally think and work for a living.
They’ve been frosted ever since. What he did to Democrats is stuff legends are made of. Well now those Democrats are Marxists and they need to be banished again.
I am terribly proud of who Newt’s enemies are, because they tell me who he is, when he’s in office.
As for Rick and Myth, they have a record full of ingratiating themselves to the GOP-E instead of leading them.
Including She Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken.
NEVER!! He already said he’s excited about mitt and should get behind one candidate.
