The United Nations humanitarian chief, Lady Amos, said she was shocked by the devastation she witnessed on a visit to Baba Amr, the suburb of the Syrian city of Homs that has suffered a month-long siege.

-excerpt-

She said: "The devastation there is significant. Part of Homs is completely destroyed and I am concerned to know what has happened to the people who live in that part of the city."

-excerpt-

The visit by Amos came as Syrian Arab Red Crescent aid workers entered Baba Amr to find it empty of its residents.

I never thought I’d be defending Assad. He has long been our enemy. But, unfortunately, the “rebel fighters” are even worse than he is.

And Assad isn’t shelling the city just because he enjoys doing it. He’s doing so because it is full of “rebel fighters,” who want to overthrow the government and install something even worse.

Are these jerks happy about what was brought about in Libya, in the name of “humanitarianism”? I notice that they’re not talking too much about it, or about the Arab spring generally.

“Unexpected.”

Translation: "Assad didn't leave enough women and children for us to rape or to trade sex for food.

Didn’t Assad recently have a 13 year bold publicly castrated and burned alive?

I don’t believe anything out of this part of the world; if people could get Saddam Hussein’s execution on a cellphone they should be able to transmit some pretty bad pictures from there. After so much of the Iraqi outrages in Kuwait turned out to be nonsense, I don’t believe any of it.

In any event, our own country is being destroyed from within.

There are no good guys involved, from what I can see. Sort of like the Russians in Chechnya.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t innocents in the crossfire, but we aren’t prepared to do what is necessary to effect long term change (see Iraq and Afghanistan for examples), so we should stay the heck out.

“unfortunately, the “rebel fighters” are even worse than he is.”

The “rebel fighters” are a mixture of people. As such, saying they are ‘worse’ is ill-informed & untrue.
