The share of Americans income that comes from government benefit programs, like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, more than doubled over the last four decades, rising from 8 percent in 1969 to 18 percent in 2009.

Actually it does track welfare on another map, click the tab, very telling. Again it is only until 2009.
You don’t have to look that far. Or that hard.
Check out the blue county/red county (NOT blue state/red state !) voting map for 2000, 2004, 2008 elections.
Geography is interesting,
demography would be more telling.
Interesting.

Notice how government benefits dipped in 1989 and then shoot back-up in 1999.
Actually, this is quite misleading since it presents the average PERCENTAGE of an individuals income that comes from government assistance. I would prefer to see what the total government outlays for assistance is for each county across the USA. That would show that the VAST MAJORITY of the assistance goes to Democrat controlled large urban cesspools.
Graphy doesn’t seem to work on my Win 7/IE8 machine - they have all the citie dots skewed to the far right side of the map, e.g. Billings is in Missouri. Fiddling with the zoom controls does not fix it nor does reloading.
And then the question would be “cause or effect”?
I say “cause”, mostly, because democrat policies cause dependence.
Some weight needs to be given to “effect” as well, because ‘rats tend to reward their own from the public treasury.
“She believes that she is taking more from the government than she paid in taxes. She worries about the consequences for her grandchildren. She said she would like politicians to propose solutions.”
From the related article. It pretty much somes up the whole problem facing America today. Everyone is waiting around for some else to fix things.
I agree mostly cause. Detroit is the classic example of the outcome of Democrat policies that lead to dependency.
You’re the only one paying attention.
Well done!
per capita outlays would be better, as obviously the highly populated areas would have more in gross terms
Alot of free loaders in the South. I would have thought that the Northeast would have that. It seems like the North is supporting the South again. UGH!
The northeast has a lot of free-loaders. We also have a lot of very wealthy people.
It just surprised me that the South has to depend on the North for their survival. It is shocking because many people think the South can survive on their own and that is just the case according to facts.
Debated on saying this but the south east seems to follow the basic shape of what is known as the black belt.
Very interesting. Nice to see Collin County, TX at only 6.8% in all benefits :)
