Thousands of Afghans protest burning of Koran at U.S. base

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan —Deeply angered over reports that U.S. troops had burned copies of the Koran, Islam’s holy text, thousands of protesters on Tuesday tried to storm the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan.

The protests erupted early in the morning, after Afghans working inside the Bagram air base reported to local residents that a number of copies of the Koran had been burned. The incident prompted the top U.S. military officer in Afghanistan, Gen. John R. Allen, to offer a public apology and order a prompt investigation.

“When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them,” Allen said in a statement. “We are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again. I assure you … I promise you … this was NOT intentional in any way.”

Gen. Ahmad Amin Naseeb, who is in charge of the religious and cultural affairs department at the Afghan defense ministry, said he had received reports “that the international troops have burned and thrown copies of Koran into the dust bins.” As a result, he said, “protesters have closed various roads in the area.”

Proper treatment of the Koran is a highly sensitive issue for Muslims across the world, including in Afghanistan, where international troops are fighting to defeat the militantly Islamist Taliban in a war that has entered its 11th year.

The US military has burned more Bibles than Korans in A-stan.

BFD! I am so sick of these monsters using every danged thing, like a scripture on a scope, just a hint of a Qur’an burning when our soldiers were ORDERED to burn thousands of Bibles, oh and farting in the general direction of a muslim. Gone is the reporting of sexual practices, acid bathed women, beating and mutilation “practices” of shar’ia. And this, THIS is cause for riots? Sooo sick of this crap.

Wait until we unfurl a banner proclaiming that Mohammed (Piss be upon him) was a child molester and that anyone worshiping him is praising a pedophile.

They can't even hold a simple funeral w/o rioting.

I understand its their country, and we are ‘guests’, who should respect local norms.

But good grief - I don’t understand the sacred nature of a book. Its just a ‘copy’. If the text of the Koran were on my computer hard drive; and, I deleted it, would that be just as offensive? Is there a ‘procedure’ for properly disposing of a Koran? If I spill coffee on it, while reading it, have I committed a crime against the Koran?

Stupid work computer. A simple copy-paste is a nightmare when you add all the script on the pages.

I just got an email from my daughter who’s stationed at Bagram. The story has temporary legs. I’m sure the muzzies’ll get over it.

Its just a silly book anyway, full of humorous anecdotes on how to have relations with goats and little boys anyway. Burn them all.

“after Afghans working inside the Bagram air base reported to local residents that a number of copies of the Koran had been burned.”

Why the hell are these people working in a US military base, which is supposed to be a secure area? Don’t tell me it’s because they are not the enemy, since this story clearly demonstrates that they are.

It concerns me that this does not happen in the USA when someone burns a flag....

Seriously, this is one way Islam and Shari’a keeps its grip on the people. There are a thousand excuses a week for angry Islamic mobs filled with holy rage to take to the streets, burn things, and kill people whom they see as non-Islamic.

Makes it difficult to be non-Islamic neighbors.

I recall last year or year before in Pockisatan, there was a howling street riot over bags of frozen french fries. When you turned the bag upside down, the pattern of the french fries in the picture on the bag vaguely resembled the Arabic word for allah, prompting RAGE and breaking things.

You are either totally on the bus or beaten to a pulp.

Are we really suprised that these idiots strap bombs to themselves and turn into human IED’s? They are protesting the burning of a book..not the sharpest knives in the drawer..

How do you convince people that democracy is good and everyone is equal, when religious tomes are being destroyed?

It’s always part of the deals when US military are somewhere. They hire locals for a lot of work.
