Gingrich Makes a Justifiable Call Not to Call
Yahoo News ^ | Feb 1, 2012 | By Bob Bartleby

COMMENTARY | Former House Speaker and presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich isn't conceding anything. Despite that, according to Fox News, Mitt Romney routed Gingrich in Tuesday's Florida Republican primary election, Gingrich isn't conceding the race. "We are going to contest every place, and we are going to win, and we will be in Tampa as the nominee in August," Gingrich said. Not only was the former Speaker not congratulatory in his speech following the polls closing in Florida, but according to CNN, he also didn't phone Romney to concede and congratulate him on his win, a long-standing tradition among rival candidates.

While some might question Gingrich's choice to ignore protocol, I'm left scratching my head and wondering why he would even be expected to make such a humiliating call to a man he clearly loathes. "We're not that stupid, and Mitt's not that clever," quipped Gingrich earlier in the week, according to HT Politics.

And it's not just Gingrich's behavior toward Romney that I've observed, there's also the fact that according to the Free Republic, 92 percent of ads in Florida have been negative instead of substantive.

Florida was a knock-down, drag out, bloody punching match in which the winner outspent the loser by a considerable stash of cash. The notion the loser would come out of the fight with any words for his opponent other than an instruction manual in the finer art of self-copulation is unrealistic, and frankly would have been completely disingenuous...

Good! I approve, and I will NEVER vote for that Romney insect, who stayed in a Paris PALACE for his “mission”.

I really don’t understand why one would call for a specific primary. A congratulatory call makes sense at the end of a race, not at each mile post along the way.

I can’t agree.

Calling the winner to congratulate him is a longstanding traidtion and one rooted in “healing” the various rifts, at least on a personal level, once a nominee is chosen.

Calling in this case “concedes” nothing. It simply respects a tradition that has been helpful in bringing together the party after the race is over.

GO NEWT, GO FREE REPUBLIC!

“So, Gingrich didn’t play nice after the fight. So what? At least he’s not packing weaponry. “

Great Article!

I’m at the point now that if Romney wins the nomination I would encourage Newt to run as an independent.

I would rather have a GOP controlled congress opposing Obama at every turn than a GOP controlled congress going along with Romney’s liberal agenda.

"Mitt, congratulations for lying about me and attacking my character during your quest for victory in Florida."

Newt made the better choice not to call.

Romney is a scumbag! He is not worthy of courtesy from Newt after his scorched earth campaign of lies and smears!

Just curious, does Romney make such ‘polite” phone calls when he does not win? Did Romney call Newt or Santorum, with any “congratulations”??

I do not know the answer.

46 States have yet to vote but "They" want to call Mutt the nominee already.

I like Santorum but it's a two man fight it seems and he should bail out.

With Newt pressuring him, I don't know if he'd get Santorum's support once he does drop out?

It might be a tradition in the case of an honorable win...but this was nothing of the sort. Romney is not an honorable man.

Hmmmm... sounds to me like Romney is whining.

“Boo hoo, he didn’t call me!!!”

Yahoo News citing FR as a source? That's pretty darn cool!

As for the missing phone call? It makes me happy. Newt has pledged his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor. That's enough. He might offend Emily Post by having a little dirt under his fingernails in-between rest stops along the road. Good.

Good for him, after the way Romney and the establishment has acted then I will never vote for their guy if RINO gets the nomination.

Of course we now have a couple of posters on another thread saying that we are now voting for obama if we do not vote for Romney. Never saw that coming, sarc>

Sometimes it’s necessary to stand for principle. Can’t imagine that he could congratulate Romney with all the negatives that he has advertised.

There are limits. Don’t really like Newt’s statements but also don’t like Romney’s statements during this campaign.

To congratulate him after this would be disingenuous.

Your statement just BEGS the questions... What RESPECT was given to Gingrich from Oromney in Florida? Honestly?

What has Oromney done to show that he even cares about what we (true conservatives) think of him?

Oromney is perfectly comfortable with alienating MOST conservatives with disgusting mischarectorations and outright lies about Gingrich. He wants to win SOOOOoooo badly that he is willing to burn everything around him to the ground in order to claim ONE STATES delegates...

To hell with that Obama wannabe elitist snob and he should consider himself damn lucky that Newt doesn't punch Oromney in the nose the next time they are face to face.

I will be writing in Newt Gingrich on my ballot this November. Oromney will NEVER get my vote.

What Romney wants is to be president -- not serve the country.
