WASHINGTON Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich both pleaded with conservatives on Sunday to unite behind their candidacies in a last-ditch effort to stop Mitt Romneys march to the Republican presidential nomination.
Mr. Santorum said the Republican contest needed to quickly narrow to a two-person race between Mr. Romney and someone else, but he declined to explicitly call on the other candidates to drop out.
Im not going to tell anybody to get in or out of a race; I think thats their decision to make, Mr. Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. But he added, We need to get this eventually down to a conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.
Mr. Santorum said the vote of support for his candidacy by Christian conservative leaders on Saturday in Texas should persuade Republicans in South Carolina that he deserves to be that alternative.

Nonsense. Anyone who would violate private property rights by using eminent domain for the benefit of a foreign corporation is an opportunist, not a conservative. Anyone who would pander to a racist claque supporting a violent takeover of the American Southwest is an opportunist, not a conservative.
Got it?
You’re putting Santorum last is you’re personal views. No reason too call anyone dense.

It’s pretty apparent that Perry is out, but he beats Santorum hands down on his record of service.
That is just plain sad and very depressing.
“For some reason conservatives cannot resonate with voters.”
Because so many get into some tightly pigeonholed ‘orthodoxy’ of what they perceive as the one, true conservatism. There really are different conservative camps, driven by different imperatives most of which are subjective and cultural. Not all by any means, but mostly. Economic, religious (and there is a hydra to be sure), social, regional, ethnic and on and on. So we start off fractured.
We also tend to aggravate the problem by driving off people who could be and should be potential political allies. Not brothers, not comrades, but allies. I am speaking here of libertarians. Some are so far off the charts they cannot be worked with, but many would agree on most of our principles of small, limited government with specific and narrow functions, and otherwise to get out of our lives. The Reagan Democrats would be another example, and a fair portion of the PUMAs were in that camp.
Culturally, I am about as conservative as Stonewall Jackson. Politically I am much more libertarian. Leave me alone to live my life as I see fit, and I will return the favor. Our laws and restrictions should be very few, and for very clear and objective reasons, and firm. Except for control freaks and submissives, EVERYONE wants that.
Accord is made harder than it should be, as the powers that be (the vile and venal political parties we are shackled with) thrive on keeping people divided, factionalized and mutually suspicious or downright hostile. As the old joke says, one lawyer in a small town will starve to death, but two make a pretty good living. As with lawyers, so with these degenerated political parties which oppress us all.
You are taking extreme liberties here with the truth. No matter how you slice it, Gov. Rick Perry is still the only real conservative in this race.
All those that’s district is democrat and how he ever managed to win at all and Obama cannot win without Pa. please raise you’re hand.(Romney’s dem district does not count as he is a democrat)
Has anybody taken a good look at his voting record?

VOTED AGAINST INCREASING THE NUMBER OF IMMIGRATION INVESTIGATORS?
VOTED TO GIVE WELFARE BENEFITS TO NATURALIZED CITIZENS?
VOTED AGAINST HIRING AN ADDITIONAL 1,000 BORDER PATROL AGENTS?
VOTED AGAINST FOOD STAMP REFORM?
VOTED AGAINST MEDICAID REFORM?
People NEED to know this about Santorums voting record.
Newt is NOT my first choice, and I cant say I like him that much.
I just feel it will take a man of Newts bravery, (yes, bravery. Newts right. The others are too timid to debate Obama) intellect, experience and debating skills to bring the Marxist/Muslim down.
Have we all forgotten his smack-downs of his RINO opponents and the Obama butt-licking interviewers?
All agree hes the most intelligent, experienced and the most skilled at debating- even the Obama loving Media.
Obama is going to have a billion dollars in this campaign fund, the commie MSM in his back pocket, hell use the same same voter fraud methods, and illegal overseas contributiions as he did in 08.
Do you think the rats are going to let the commie coup they they have hoped for for generations slip through their fingers??
The fight is going to be the hardest fought and the dirtiest in U.S history.
We have GOT to have a STRONG man with the experience, intellect and debating skills to go up against Obama- or America is doomed.
Tough noogies!
haha! Good one.
My predictions for SC:
Romney 37%
Santorum 25%
Paul 18%
Newt 12%
Perry 5%
Huntsman 2%
Other 1%
“He seems to want to handle it by taking benefits away from the already retired”
You mean he’s in favor of Social Security reform? Earned my vote!
First, Romney's the 'establishment' candidate for a few reasons, most of which is that he's spent 8 years cultivating support from within the establishment, trading support then for support now. He's worked the system, and become the anointed one not for his political views, but as payback in the buddy system.
Next, he is not Obama lite. Obama is 'Present' in the White House - he hates work, hates working with people, and would much rather spend another billion of our dollars on another massive junket to another nation than spend a day working to forward his agenda. Vs Romney who 'loves mandates' - that's not a quote from some private meeting or a speech to some liberals, that's a quote from the 2008 Republican Presidential Debates.
Worse, Romney's team, if they get the White House, will work to exclude anyone who worked against Romney (IE: Any conservative) from any support from the national party. Defunding of campaigns, support of 'moderate' candidates in close races, etc.
Romney is everything we fear from an Obama who actually works.
?!?
So? Is the information wrong because Santorum was listed last?
If Santorum and Newt are out, you have Perry and Huntsman to choose from.
It’s *THAT* simple.
Flip a coin, or *find the one that best meets your political beliefs.*
(Not another explanation of how to select a candidate... when the heck did everyone forget the basics of civics?!?)
I tell you I am going to be upset more with Rick S. than Newt (splitting votes) because Rick S. has a less chance of beating Obama. Newt can take the fight right to the devil’s den. That is not harsh. That is the truth. This is a battle for the heart and soul of America. South Carolina, don’t give us RomneyCare/Obamacare.
“Our country doesnt need an alter boy.”
So your clubhouse says, “no socons allowed?”
Good to know!
Oh, BTW - Just so you know.
It’s altar. ;)
Conservativegreatgrandma: “Santorum is no conservative. Just examine his voting record.”
Carry_Okie: “There are two sides to that argument:
Gingrich is no conservative. Just examine his advocacy record.”
******************************
The sad truth is that you are both correct. Which means the calculus shifts to which one got or can get anything done for conservatives or even mere Constitutional governance, and can that candidate win?
Both of these guys are compromised. Which one is least compromised, and which one is most able to win? I’ve made up my mind, but that is the dilemma we all face with this lackluster field at a critical juncture.
As you said we are badly divided and divided we are easily conquered. I think being divided is certainly one factor.
