Santorum and Gingrich Scramble for the Conservative Vote

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich both pleaded with conservatives on Sunday to unite behind their candidacies in a last-ditch effort to stop Mitt Romney’s march to the Republican presidential nomination.

Mr. Santorum said the Republican contest needed to quickly narrow to a two-person race between Mr. Romney and someone else, but he declined to explicitly call on the other candidates to drop out.

“I’m not going to tell anybody to get in or out of a race; I think that’s their decision to make,” Mr. Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. But he added, “We need to get this eventually down to a conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.”

Mr. Santorum said the vote of support for his candidacy by Christian conservative leaders on Saturday in Texas should persuade Republicans in South Carolina that he deserves to be that alternative.

Rather then letting the problem get worse, we can fix it straight away.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but Santorum will lose to Obama on this issue alone. So there will be no fixing

I beg to differ.

We need health care reform. Or go bankrupt. Pick one.

blargh - social security reform.

Brain fart there.

That’s the stark reality of it. Obama can deny it all he likes, but he’ll get crushed by it.

Why should we play into his myth when we know how things are in the real world? Socsec reform was needed about 10 years ago. Now is too late.

And how does NC, VA, IN, IA, OH come into play once they start recycling the campaign against Santorum that cost him his senate seat in PA?

Gee, I had no idea that Bob Casey was running for President.

P.S. NOBODY can win the nomination but Mitt if Romney wins SC, NOBODY

Why? This is still very early. Are you saying three states get to pick the Rep. nominee?

Santorum talked about SS at the last debate and I was surprised more people didn’t take notice of his blood-curdling plan. He said it was “sharing the pain.”

That was when Gingrich said we had to approach it from a whole different point of view, not pain, but how we can offer options, restructure to make it sound going forward, and eliminate fraud (something Obama has consistently refused to do, even though Medicare fraud is expected to cost 1 trillion dollars over the next 10 years). The thing I like about Gingrich is that he has positive solutions for things and you feel positive when you listen to him.

Santorum sounds bitter and priggish, as if those seniors who are selfish enough to collect something they’ve paid into all their lives are the root of the whole problem and must be punished.

Are we gonna all tell each other “you’re gonna love Romney”instead of doing something about something?

You have no sense of political reality if you do not understand that a Romney win in SC coronates him.

Of course, I suppose I could join the miracle crusade and declare that we could always try and talk the delegates into switching their votes for so-and-so.

It is astonishing that many make excuses and pass Gingrich through with all of his past flaws and then say something as ignorant as this.Santorum was in dem territory.Obama cannot win without PA. PA hates Obama but they’re dem side would not show if one of they’re own from Butler, PA was POTUS.

We’re going to be attacked for it anyways, we might as well get the real deal.

I have no problem with a Santorum/Newt ticket. I just don’t want Newt in the driver’s seat.

It’s the truth. There are going to be cuts to social security.

The longer we put them off, the more devastating the consequences when the bill comes due and we are insolvent.

We’ve already gone from 65 percent debt to GDP now we’ve almost doubled that in this administration. We simply don’t have the means to continue on as we have done.

This means cuts, and yes, cuts to social security. I don’t believe those should be the only cuts - far from it, but there will be cuts across the board.

If we are asking young men and women to sacrifice their futures in order to pay down the debt already incurred, then we can cut social security too.

There are other ways of handling this and Santorum’s prissy, spiteful blaming of Granny is not going to fly. People have paid into this, and saying it’s now going to default and it’s really Granny’s fault anyway for doing what she was told (and forced) to do by the government for all her working life is sure not going to be a big seller with a major voting bloc.

Plus, it’s just plain wrong. There’s no point in arguing about whether SS should or shouldn’t have been founded in the first place, but it does exist, many people were told they could rely on it, and you can’t just dump them and walk away. Gingrich actually has ideas for reworking SS and permitting a gradual transition to other systems for younger people. Santorum sounds like he’s in the Granny-is-a-useless-eater brigade.
