During his 2006 Senate re-election campaign (which he lost), Rick Santorum released this ad to demonstrate his ability to work across the aisle. He touts having partnered on legislation with Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer and then Sen. Hillary Clinton.

We've already run a candidate from the Senat who claimed he could 'reach across the aisle'. How did that work out?

I think most of them mean “reach around”.

The conservative movement needs to initiate a real movement to draft a true fiscal conservative ASAP (before Super Tuesday)...with the sovereign debt crisis upon us...with the Fed desperately printing money in an effort toi inflate away tens of trillions of dollars worth of US debt, this country NEEDS a fiscal conservative. Anything less won't do now

This country is heading off an economic cliff and we have a choice between a Marxist who wants to speed the train up and Republicans (including Santorum) who will keep the train going about the same speed

I think we overrate far too much this type of stuff. Whether we like it or not, most Northeastern Republicans have to do some of this or they can’t be elected. “Rockefeller Republicans” do exist in large numbers in the Northeast and we have to remember we can’t just ignore them if we want to win national elections. No one is pure with their votes, particularly in the Senate. I think he has a good head on his shoulders and will vote conservative most of the time, but not all of the people he represents will agree with our core conservative principles. Sometimes we need to move the ball incrementally, not just throw the long pass.

I agree. We need a candidate who can “reach across the aisle” with weapons to conquer the enemy, not cooperate with them.

How it works out is simple: Three steps to the Left and one step to the Right.

We've done nothing but move the ball backwards for the last 80 years...when was the last year the federal government spent less than the year before (other than after WWII)? We are staring the Medicare/Social Security entitlement black hole in the face...being satisfied with smaller moves backwards won't do anymore...We need a standard bearer who is unequivocally committed to cutting spending

True enough, we never say much about when reaching across the aisle is done for good reason. One instance I can think of off the top of my head is Curt Weldon working with Cynthia McKinney on Able Danger.

I think you are misunderstanding my post. Long term change in the conservative direction is just like building a business. The reason things have gone against us is because the other side took the long term view and seeded society in a way we didn’t. Examples of this are how the educational establishment has been guided towards progressive educational approaches, both in higher education and K-12 curiculums and hiring practices and in governmental regulatory creep.

When we answer that only huge, quickly installed budget cuts and complete regulatory reductions can solve the problem that scares a number of independents that we need to achieve our goals. Think of it as the difference in managing an enterprise: you have an annual budget PLUS a long-term investment capital budget. We have dropped the ball BIG TIME on the incremental long-term strategy in selling our ideas and allowed the other side to define us via the media and the educational establishment. We need to start to fight in those arenas, starting with curriculum fights.

I’m just as worried about the deficits and the entitlements as you are, but those problems didn’t grow over a one-year period and they aren’t going to be solved in a one-year period without throwing away the next election (think 1995 after the 1994 House elections). Hearts and minds is not just a military term; it is the key to conservative principles winning the idea war too. In a military campaign you plan a lot before committing the troops, we need to do the same politically.

Perry has been the governor for 10 years, before that he was Lt. Gov. While he was in that previous position I remember him being called the pitt bull of the legislature because of always being in favor of cutting spending. He is pro gun, pro life, pro drilling. He wants the federal government to control the border and he has instituted a picture ID for voting. Those are all things that freepers say they want. Too bad about his stumbles in the debates, a real shame and loss for our country.
