Gingrich, Perry fail to make Va. ballot

(AP)WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

If your name was on the previous 2008 ballot and you get 15K sigs you don’t need to be certified for 2012. This applies to Romney, Ron Paul, and (presumably) Obama.

In other words, ALL candidates who attempted to get certified for 2012 were rejected.

No write-ins allowed in VA primaries.

Interesting wording in the law. The way it is written could be argued both ways. It doesn't say write ins are forbidden in the primary. It says that write ins are accepted for elections, except for primaries.

At any rate, if the majority of voters write in a candidate that beats the person “deemed” to have qualified, a good case exists for a legal challenge based on disenfranchisement of those voters. Voter's rights have been found to trump rules.

Does VA have a provision for write in candidates?

Write-in votes are allowed (but not required to be allowed) in a primary election. It is up to the party to decide whether to allow write-in votes.

The the 2008 presidential primary election the Virgina Republican Party counted zero (0) write-in votes.

It is up to the Virgina Republican Party to decide whether or not to count write-in votes for 2012.

Given that party the VA GOP is dominated by Romney supporters, it is very doubtful.

“I’m beginning to think a brokered GOP convention will lead to the best outcome.”

I’ve been wondering about this, but must admit that I’m not sure how a brokered convention works.”

I would bet that the GOP Establishment is even more able to control the outcome of a brokered convention.

CNN reporting, turns out Perry failed to qualify for Virginia’s March 6 Republican primary because he thought it was being held in West Virgina.

One can certainly question Newt and Pery’s organizational skills, hence their ability to be President.(I’m a Gingrich supporter. What a let down!)

That would be a fascinating outcome. Myth gets 25%, RuPaul gets about 10%, and the remaining 65% goes to "unaccepted write-ins".

The dog ate my homework. It’s not my fault, they’re all against me. It’s a conspiracy!! Pass the popcorn.

Indeed. Boo-hoo. In 2008, they had the same rules? That year, McCain, Rudy, Huckabee, Paul, and even that lazy old Fred Thompson all got it done.

UPDATE: And… no write-in options, either! Doug Mataconis and Ed Morrissey observe the relevant Virginia law:

At all elections except primary elections it shall be lawful for any voter to vote for any person other than the listed candidates for the office by writing or hand printing the person’s name on the official ballot. “

I find wiggle room here. The law does NOT state that write ins are NOT permitted for primaries. It states that write ins have to be accepted for all elections, but then provides that the primary can make an exception-not that it HAS to make an exception.

Don’t know if I explained that very well, but I hope you get my drift.LOL.

"And as the polls close here on Super Tuesday, the clear winner is Mitt Romney with 25%, followed by Ron Paul with 10%. The 65% remainder of the votes cast were unaccepted write-in votes."

LOL. Yep. I think the GOP deserves it too. They have blocked conservative candidates for decades using all manner of methods.

The obfuscation is likely deliberate. They don't want to make it too obvious that the party is free to decide whether or not to accept write-in votes.
