White Castle burger chain considers alcohol sales

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The White Castle hamburger chain is sipping on the idea of selling alcoholic beverages at its restaurants. The 90-year-old company is testing beer and wine sales at a location in Lafayette, Ind., that combines a traditional White Castle burger joint with a Blaze Modern BBQ, a new restaurant concept also being tried out. In other cities, Columbus, Ohio-based White Castle is testing an Asian food concept and a restaurant that serves grilled sandwiches.

Getting people drunk first might encourage them to buy those greasy sliders.

White Castle burgers were good after a night of drinking to sop up the excess.

WC is usually where you go after imbibing - now both could be in one place. What a timesaver!

They should work on getting the food out the window in less than 10 minutes first.

Every time I go to one it’s 10+ minutes waiting when there is no other customers in front of me.

then 50% of the time, they screw up my order.

I still like a good gut bomb though.

For me, the sliders usually come after the beer.

And then the battle is to keep them both from coming back up.

I had my first and last White Castle hamburgers in early August 1975 in Indianapolish, IN. I decided to try it for supper the night before I shipped out for my first Army tour in Germany. I was completly unimpressed with them and haven’t had one since.

Getting people drunk first might encourage them to buy those greasy sliders.

Perfect product symbiosis -- alcohol begets slider cravings, at which you can now get more alcohol. The never-ending cycle.

I used to get WC frozen burgers (no restaurants near me).

But when I saw the unsanitary conditions of the floor where they pack them on “Undercover Boss” I never bought them again. Nor would I go to their restaurants since the view from the top has so little regard for cleanliness.

People who order wine at White Castle are the type who think that if it comes in a box or has twist off tops it’s for the upper crust.

That being said if I put down a few belly bombs with a large order of their onion chips along with a few beers, dear lord you better not be downwind an hour later...

Normally the sliders come after consumption of adult beverages. Sometimes with less than desired results. Not sure if that’s the beverages fault, or the sliders.

Hmmm... Might need more research.

It’s a mistake to ever special-order a White Castle. It’s 2 am - I stumble in and just ask for 10 whatevers and they are in the bag in about a minute. All the food is the same. :-)

Do you really mean that? For years I have been conducting an informal study to try to determine what comes first, the "Bad Neighborhood" or the White Castle. After finding a Dekalb, IL neighborhood just beginning to decline and another White Castle off of a highway exit west of St. Louis that had not yet declined, BUT THE White Castle was brand new, that the White Castle precipitates the decline of the neighborhood.

On the other hand, it might be worth it. Also, a sense of danger (check out the WC on 72nd and Stony Island in Southside Chicago) might actually enhance the experience.

I spent 5 years in DeKalb craving White Castles! I couldn’t believe one wouldn’t do well right off campus. I always had to drive 30 miles to satisfy my cravings for WC or Popeye’s Chicken.

That said, there was always Burritoville! And some good Chinese.

Grew up on LI (50s-60s) and dining at the WC in West Hempstead was a must. Eleven cents apiece, IIRC.
Went back a few years ago - and it's still there!
Good food. "Buy Em By the Sack."

You were worried about Popeye's when you had an underutilized Harold's Chicken Shack (now closed) in town?! For Shame! Shamer on Dekalb.

You're not just whistlin' Dixie! Unfortunately, we don't have any WC down here in my current neck of the woods. I was in Evansville, IN for a meeting a couple of years ago. After a night of adult beverages, several of us called a cab to take us through the WC drive-through. We ended up devouring two suitcases of burgers. Darn fine intoxicated eating they are. I don't know what made me feel worst the next morning: overindulging on alcohol or WC?

White Castle Blues - The Smithereens

Saturday night and it’s gettin’ late
I’m gettin’ hungry, I just can’t wait
Not just any kind of burger will do
I’m being hit by those
White Castle blues
White Castle blues

I think I’ll get some crisp onion rings
To compliment 10 of those little square things
An orange soda or a milkshake will do
I’m being hit by those
White Castle blues
White Castle blues

I was first introduced to those bastards by Duke
On a hot summer night when we went out to cruise
But memories such as Bobbo and puke
Are just part of the saga of
White Castle blues
White Castle blues
Hey!

As a former culinary professional that has worked in fine dining establishments (and for Uncle Sam, as well)... I heartily approve of this. Beer and sliders.

I would do that for supper if one was a few states closer, and I hadn't started making chicken, roasted corn and tortilla soup from scratch.

I do last mile expedited freight. Basically pickup at the air port or terminal and run it out to it’s destination. I visit a lot of white castles and other food joints.

Blaine (65 and 10) is closest to home. They are extremely slow.
