SYDNEY (AP) — An Australian man has been sentenced to 500 lashes and a year in a Saudi Arabian jail after being convicted of blasphemy, officials said Wednesday.
The 45-year-old man, identified by family members as Mansor Almaribe of southern Victoria state, was detained in the holy city of Medina last month while making the Muslim pilgrimage of hajj. Family members told Australian media that Saudi officials accused him of insulting the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, a violation of Saudi Arabia's strict blasphemy laws.

I think the Saudi Arabian authorities lash you until you fall down and then let you recuperate in the hospital until you recover, then finish the sentence.

Well, I’m glad I don’t know the particulars but it does seems a bit 18th century. I guess that these strange folks may creep into the 21st century eventually but it does not seem to be any time soon.

He won’t die,they will schedule the lashings to a set interval once every 2 weeks or some such.Probably if Australia pursued them the same way,they did over that Persian actress stuck in Iran,they’d probably settle for quite a lot less.
Since this is however a Western ally,they are unlikely to intervene and honestly if you want to change this and he is an Australian citizen......e-mail the Australian government.
Otherwise there are ways to resolve this.
And another thing, why does the AP call Medina “the holy city of”?

Yes. Essentially he will be beaten to death. He will die of the trauma and blood loss or a combination of it. Even if he survived, I am sure he would be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. How anyone could stand 10 of those, let alone 500, is beyond me. Animals.

Would other “Western” Muslims care if one of them was beaten to death on his “hajj”? Saudi Arabia has a monopoly on this thing because every Muslim must attempt to go to Mecca once in his/her lifetime. Maybe Turkey will take back the Arabian peninsula?

Nah, the person doing the lashing has to hold the Koran under his armpit along with the whip. If he drops it the sentence is completed. They don’t even keep count.
I knew of two who were beaten. The guy got 500 but they broke it up into two sessions. The gal got 250. His crime was sleeping with an illegal immigrant.
He was more embarrased than hurt because the beatings were held in the public square and some of his buddies saw it.
