Cain camp backs off Perry charge as new payout details emerge
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/03/2011 | James Oliphant

That was fast: As part of its seemingly ever-evolving media strategy, Herman Cain’s campaign appears to have pulled the plug on blaming Rick Perry for the swirl of accusations surrounding the candidate.

“We want to move on with the campaign. Let’s get over these things that don’t mean anything to the American public,” Mark Block, Cain's campaign manager, told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly on Thursday afternoon.

But that’s not about to become any easier. Politico reported Thursday that one of the women who accused Cain of sexual harassment during his time at the National Restaurant Assn. received a payout of $45,000 to settle the matter and keep quiet.

Previously, the New York Times reported that a second woman received a severance of $35,000—which for her was a year’s salary.

The Politico report would seem to again put Cain’s credibility at issue. He has said the woman’s complaint is one that he recalls, but has described it as “baseless” and first said she received a negligible “termination" settlement of perhaps two or three months' salary.

He later shifted his account, saying the amount could have been larger, perhaps six months’ salary.

Block appeared on Fox News on Wednesday evening and blistered the Perry campaign, accusing former Cain aide Curt Anderson, now in the Perry camp, of leaking details of the harassment allegations.

But Anderson, in a round of media interviews, denied knowing anything about the allegations and had nothing but good things to say about Cain.

“I didn't know anything about this. It's hard to leak something you don't know anything about, of course,” Anderson told CNN on Thursday.

Goodness gracious, I made a comment about one thing and suddenly you are getting all upset about something having to do with Rick Perry? No wonder Republicans have problems winning elections. I thought we were all on the same side.

The current President of NRAss is a Democrat ~ she's buddies with Br'r Bennett and John Podesta, Bill Clinton's former chief of staff.

The connection there is obvious ~ the Board at NRAss probably ought to look into this since it's their integrity that's on the block.

He didn't freak out over the rock. The concern he expressed was for "the N-word".

I've explained this to you several times earlier but you want to believe something else. I suppose you can but it demonstrates you have no understanding of what goes on in "black America" including the way certain parties test every black man for whether or not he's an "Uncle Tom".

No doubt that you want to think Cain came up with the Rock ~ but he didn't. It's more likely the staffer for a black Congressman who engineered the Black Caucus Parade and the "spitting stories" ~ and you remember that, right? He put out the news stories to his buddy bloggers about half an hour before the event started ~

the company is out 33 grand on one, and 45 grand on the other

Do you have a link to some source that says that two settlements were paid out to two different women? Just asking, because I've read unsourced comments that the 33K and 45K stories are about the same woman. Since nobody's seen the settlement documents, any reports of monetary amounts are at least third hand, so it's not difficult to imagine that the amount may be reported incorrectly.

and witnesses, not willing to put up with a jerk using suggestive flattery that he wants to call “compliments”,

Again, sincere question here. I've just now been trying belatedly to catch up with the latest developments in this story. I heard the one from PJM saying that there was a witness who saw Cain and a woman get into a taxi together, and then PJM later retracted the story and said no one witnessed them get in a taxi together. Is there a link to a source about a different story, or even this same story, that cites eye witnesses with specific details of the complaint(s)?

Also, the characterization of Cain engaging in "suggestive flattery"? Is there somewhere I can find a source that reports details or a witness for that?

TIA

I have been praying seriously for the same thing. Rush has so much protection and self-immunity, he seems like the likely candidate - or maybe he doesn’t have enough money and it would take a whole group of rich people.

There is a new site, or at least I’ve just found it recently, it’s called:

http://www.newstransparency.com

It doesn’t look too aggressive but at least the framework is there, and I try to check on it regularly to see if they are catching on at all. Seems like someone could post the simple results of a general background check there or if it got enough traffic - people who knew people in the media might post there... I still remember a post on FR of an eyewitness incident of someone who saw Matthews throw a fit in a pizza place once - because they got his pizza wrong; not only was it obviously credible - it really was eye opening... or people could just go politico and make things up... :)

” Which one does not belong? “

An astute observation. However, there are rumblings that the Cain affection for Romney has legs that actually belong to Rove and Company. Thus, Cain/Rove/Rice firms up such a theory, makes a fine covert fit after all, and explains Cain’s obsessive hits on Perry but never Romney. The covert is becoming more overt? Cain is toast, but for the Bush machine floating his boat.

Yes, perrywinkle, now run out and get some sugar for my coffee, sugar plum. The simple thing is, Perry is desperate, still sinking in the polls, wilson works for Perry, so this attack is a last ditch attempt to save perry. Not working very well is it.

The first crisis his campaigns hits, and they can’t even get their story straight.

The Cain Train failed the first test of planning and strategty. The handling of this should have been one of the first plans put in place so there would be a rapid response with accurate facts and coverage. Cain can't so naive that he believes his past isn't going to probed in-depth. "Be Prepared" and Cain wasn't.

Doesn’t this Mark Block have a somewhat dark past? With all the accusations and half information from him maybe “he” is the one dropping a dime on Cain.

I appreciate your need for sources and you’ve caught me all hair brained after 24 hours of net hopping. Check redstate.com, hotair.com, daily caller, Drudge, lucianne.com. You said you read the PJM story, right? I didn’t know that taxi version had already been recanted, but I did read PJ earlier. That is the best I can suggest for quick reads, and scan of titles pertaining to Herb’s adventures. (Also, I don’t know how to post links into the FR comments section like everyone else, but don’t tell anyone.”)

You claimed this is all good news for Cain as he's raking in the cash. I point out that lots of people have raised a lot of cash, only to fizzle out into obscurity. Raising money is not the key thing to being POTUS.

Could you remind me which Fortune 500 companies or industry trade groups that Miss O’Donnell headed up.

Is that your criterion for GOP candidate? CEO of a company on a list? Steve Forbes, of course wasn't Fortune 500, but he was on your list? This Huntsman guy is the "CEO" of his own company. You like him? CEO of Pillsbury is the key thing to being POTUS?

My memory isn’t what it used to be.

Neither is your logic, apparently.

>> Block & Cain have double standards, that makes them twice as good.

ROFL!

I’m not quite ready to tar and feather Cain over the innuendo... but it’s disturbing how many of those here on FR are saying “no big deal” to behavior that IS a big deal and HAS BEEN CONSIDERED a big deal right here on FR when a ‘rat does it.

Low character is low character! Do we really honest-to-God now believe here on FR that low character on the part of a conservative is excusable because Bill Clintoon did it??!?

Okay, thanks. I’ve read most, if not all, of those sources yesterday and this morning. I see no source saying what you seem to have read or heard. If you come across a source, if you FReepmail or ping me, I’d be more than happy to help you out by posting the link for you. If you go back to the PJM story about the taxi and what all, you will see that they have redacted the story and now say that there is no witness to the taxi thing.

Listening to Cain on Hannity right now. He’s saying there was one payout to one complainant, that it was a severance agreement, not a legal settlement. He’s still saying the complaint was found to be baseless. He says that he didn’t sign any non-disclosure/confidentiality agreement, the Restaurant Association did, and he hasn’t seen it. If so, I’d guess he likely doesn’t know the monetary terms either.
