The ‘self-reliance’ menace
NY Post ^ | November 2, 2011 | FRANK J. FLEMING

At a San Francisco fund-raiser last week, President Obama warned the audience that if he’s not re-elected, it will bring a new era of self-reliance in America.

In this dystopian future, people wouldn’t be able to rely on the government to give them health care or college or anything else we now consider a need. That’s just an awful, scary thought these days. Which begs the question: Are we too sissy for freedom anymore?

Not everyone acknowledges how scary true freedom is. Sure, you get to make your own choices, but then government won’t be there to catch you when you fall.

Some people considered freedom worth that risk, though. When the Pilgrims came to America, there was no government to make sure they had food or shelter or even anti-bullying laws that kept others from making fun of their silly hats with the buckles on them.

If you aren’t self-reliant, but depend on the government for everything, you are no more than a head of livestock, at the mercy of whatever the government might want to do with you.

I’d rather have freedom. Being dependent on the government in that fashion is scary.

It is not just the government. As part of my prepper considerations I’ve been looking at everything. Consider for just one moment of not spending any money for say...a day.

I’m not talking about just not buying something, I am talking about the moment you get up and turn on that light switch, the moment you flush the toilet, fill the coffee pot...heat your home.

Thanks lowbridge.
[Zero] warned the audience that if he's not re-elected, it will bring a new era of self-reliance in America.
And that will happen faster if he *is*.

That's where family, church, and community come in. Those closest will know if you're a slob or if you're really making an effort. But we have destroyed our families, denigrated Christianity, and turned our communities over to organizers and addicted ourselves to help from the government.

The idea of the American form of government is predicated on self-reliance. If Mr. Obama and his ilk have water inadvertently spilled upon them, and shrink into corner saying, “what a world,” more will blink, get up, and return to the land of the living than not. Where’s that pail of water, anyway? ;)

We are, as a people, moving back in with our parents.

Once we moaned and complained like teenagers about the rules and restrictions, and looked forward to the day when we would be of age and could move out and do what we wanted with our adult freedom.

Then we discovered that with this freedom come work and responsibility, and we’re simply not up to the demands of adulthood. So we’re moving into our parents’ basement, where Mom will do our laundry and cook our meals, and Dad will pay the mortgage and utilities. We’ll work part-time at McDonald’s and give half our paycheck to our folks, and spend our remaining money and time on a PlayStation.

Yep, self-reliance is a frightening thing to most Americans.
