Electability seen as key to McCain's rising support (Flashback)

(Reuters) - John McCain has vaulted from long shot to the front-runner to win the Republican nomination for U.S. president. The reason? Voter confidence he can beat the eventual Democratic candidate in November's election, according to interviews with some of his supporters.

McCain defeated close rival Mitt Romney comfortably in a hard-fought nomination vote in Florida this week, giving him crucial momentum going into the big round of votes on "Super Tuesday."

Twenty-four states are holding nominating contests for one or both parties on February 5 to pick their candidate for the November election.

Allies and voters said that key to the Arizona senator's success has been convincing supporters that he has the greatest chance of winning in November and handing Republicans another term in the White House when two-term President George W. Bush steps down.

Voters said McCain, who is a fiscal and social conservative but who has crossed swords with his own party over issues such as immigration reform, was the Republican's best bet for winning over independents and even some Democrats.

Thanks for posting this. It is nice to have little reminders of how the world really works.

Electability is not an issue in this race. I could beat Obama. We need to be true to our roots and nominate the candidate that best reflects our goals.

And let the chips fall where they may.

I disagree. I think Obama beats any of the weak GOP field. Most polls see his approval rebounding from the lows and the economy isnt even picking up.

I don’t understand the overconfident predictions I continue to hear. Remember these predictions?
1) Obama would lose in a landslide (2008)
2) GOP would capture the Senate
3) GOP would gain 100+ House seats

I remember them. Overconfidence is our greatest enemy. And no one knows what the economy will look like a year from now. A year is an eternity in political time.

No, I don’t ever remember hearing that Obama would lose in a landslide, anything but. Obama scared me to death the first time that I ever heard him speak at because I recognized a familiar tone and cadence in his voice that reminded me of an old southern tent preacher and I saw the exact same reaction from the Blacks in the audience, standing with arms in the air and swaying.

It could have been staged and looking back on it, it probably was staged, but the effect was the same. Obama as the messiah.

RINOs are lying, manipulative, bottom feeding scum. They’ll happily toss a race to the democrats just to say “I told you so”.

It’s the Obama as the Messiah theme that the Democrats want and need to revive. That’s why we, the Republicans need to stay focused on who the enemy is and not let the media turn our focus against fellow Republicans.

That is also the reason that the Democrats are trying to tear down the personal image of Herman Caine. Caine contrasts well against the nasty, arrogant Obama. Caine smiles and is positive, offering solutions, not simply pointing an accusatory finger at someone else.

The Obama campaign is working hard to make Obama seem more likable, putting him out on the campaign trail, kissing babies, but they still haven’t stopped him from making nasty remarks, though he does seems to have toned it down a bit. I read that they have decided to put Michelle in the role of attack dog, instead.

The Republicans just need to keep repeating all the nasty, arrogant remarks that Obama has made in the last two and half years and remind everyone who Obama has revealed himself to be.

Eva - Yes, many including on this site were so confident in early 2008 that Obama was a sure loser. Some participated in Operation Chaos to make sure he got the Democrat nomination.

Romney cheerfully bowed to the elites when they chose McCain in exchange for the promise that they would make him the nominee in 2012. Just like McCain bowed to the elites when they chose Bush in exchange for the promise that they would make him the nominee in 2008.

That’s my theory anyway.

I’m looking at the world of next fall, not today. And to be frank, I do not expect obama to finish his term.
