Lots of buzz about this among political junkies on Twitter tonight, mostly of the so-bad-its-good variety. Is the image of this guy taking a soothing drag on camera after 40 seconds of ad-tastic exertion really that strange and transgressive? Cains campaign is all about unapologetic populist authenticity, and theres nothing more unapologetically, authentically populist than defiantly lighting one up when the mood strikes, politesse be damned. As the man says, Weve run a campaign like nobodys ever seen. If youve got a problem with casual smoking during presidential spots, well, that only proves what an uptight establishment RINO you really are.
In the next spot, Block should have a smoke in one hand and a can of Schlitz in the other. And as the camera pulls back, theres Cain next to him, eating a slice of Godfathers and giving a big thumbs-up.

Wasting money on this kind of thing says that he isn't fiscally responsible, so in that aspect, yes, it's important and does mean something.
He already has a base who likes him and that's who this thing ( it's hardly an "ad" ) is directed to.
And as far as what the thing "says",it's being taken as a "blank slate", though it truly isn't one, by his supporters here. And THAT is a shame!
I'll be pointing out your duplicity every time you pretend to be concerned about the effects of Cain's campaign, as you have stated that you will actively work against him. It's etched in cyberspace. LOL
THAT’s YOUR opinion....I see it differently
How much money do you think he spent on that ad anyway? Not that much I’m sure. It’s not like it was a paid actor - it’s his chief of staff :-)
Sure, I saw the video. I still don't understand why you seem to care so much. It's just not a big deal.
Lazy and inept is what you are; sweetums.
Are you kidding? Did we watch the same ad?
I could've produced this ad for free if they had asked me, and you could probably find someone on fiverr.com to do an ad like this LOL
For what it's worth, I've contributed a fairly paltry sum thus far, and I'm wondering if he limited the budget for this sum to my contribution
Bang for the buck this ad will have great ROI
And now you're also on record stating that you will be stalking me.
Fine.........have at it; it shall profit you nothing. :-)
Thats weird.
Cultist! LOL
I’m a Cain supporter...that’s one of the worst ads I’ve seen. Herman, you have money now, hire some professionals.
Whatever it was, it was too much money. That’s my point and only that.
OK Fine!
We'll check you off as an Obama voter.
I don’t agree that this ad just speaks to his base.
I voted for Cain in the primary. He lost.
My mother lived in another state. She only heard of Cain because of me. She only paid attention to him because of what I had to say about him.
If I could forward this ad to my mother today, she would have sat up and listened. She would have then passed it on to her friends. I know that instinctively. This ad would have made her take a look to see who this man was. And after that look, she would have researched him and listened to him.
After that, she would have been informed about him. Then she could have decided whether or not to vote for him.
It could go be effective as a way of getting people to take that “first look”. Because I believe this ad has a “likeable” message to it, even if everyone here doesn’t agree.
I also believe the media will talk about this precisely because of the smoking. And if they’re talking about Cain he gets more exposure.
I care that so many here don't see the forest for the tress.
Cain's chief of staff made it. We need to judge the quality of a candidate by whom he hires, what he does, and what he says. Cain has NO political record, outside of a failed primary. That's why every little jot and tittle matters.
It doesn't help him with undecideds.
Then Dems voting in favor of Romney and against Cain should make you happy since he continues to push you away. So, how HAS given you a reason to vote for him/her? And you are still undecided...really? Sounds like a cop out to me, but that is ok.
How about negative. The vast majority of people in this Country have negative associations with smoking and smokers. Why do you think Obama did everything he could to hide his habit, even though he was seen as "cool"?
Cain has a new guy running his advertising.
Here’s the info in this link.

I don't think that I nod my head, one way or another;it's a subconcious thing.
I am not a body language expert.......I'm just relaying what those I've seen say.
I said I'll be pointing out your duplicity every time you pretend to be concerned about Cain's campaign, as you have stated that you will be working against him.
If you have a problem with that, take it to the mods.
That ad is one of the most elegant rebukes of our pussified nanny-state culture that I’ve ever seen.
Are you that benighted, that this is all you can come up with...that I am an Obama supported?
Seek help.........you are in far worse shape, mentally, than you can suppose.
It isn’t Cain who is smoking, though.
Obama smokes.
Laura Bush smoked for years and it was covered in Bush’s 2000 campaign that she smoked. Did people hate George because Laura was a smoker?
It doesn't help him with undecideds.
Why do you care? You're actively working against him.
Id like to see comedian dennis miller write some ads for Cain as he is a cain supporter
I love Herman Cain, but that ad was cree-eeepy.
me thinks thou (nopardons) doth protest too much....
it’s a glove across the face to the leftists who want to “nanny state” us into outlawing cigs, while making pot legal.
At least, that’s what I read into i.
They obviously weren't taking into account all the language-stunted viewers who rely solely on head movement to interpret what somebody is saying.
Yah? Why? I see his "outsideness" of Washington as a good thing, not a bad thing. Tell me why it should be a bad thing.
And should it get any kind of press and/or T.V. play, it WILL get mentioned that they guy is Cain's chief of staff. Of course someone's chief of staff is going to be singing the praises of whomever they are working for.
Perhaps it shall get attention; just don't be surprised if it's the WRONG kind of attention and THAT is also my point.
Political neophytes make mistakes;sadly Cain has made quite a lot of them.
Many of us ARE looking for the "unRomney".
I keep wishing that Cain would get better advisers and do what's needed to be that; sadly, he doesn't.
what in the world....
I .... I don’t even know what to think about that ad.
In all honesty, I don't know and neither do most people.
I don't think that I nod my head, one way or another;it's a subconcious thing.
You were probably nodding while typing this.
Try to pay attention to your body language and see if you nod your head when you say no and shake your head when you say yes.
I was responding to a poster who thought the smoking would have people associating Cain with "unconventional" or "real". The actual association will be as I said, a negative association with Cain and smoking. He does not need this. Every ad he has should be associated with something positive. Now that I have seen Cain's chief of staff, it makes me question what should be Cains strength, that he surrounds himself with the top people. This guy did not look to be one of those top people.
Cain needs to accentuate the positive and this ad did not do that.
Obviously you either can't read, or have an abject lack of skill, when it comes to reading comprehension.
I was a Palin supporter. She decided to not run. Now, I am looking for someone to vote for and nobody is given me any reasons to switch my support.
I'm NOT looking for perfection, not by a long shot; just someone whom I can believe is capable and trustworthy and conservative.
You left out the part that you're actively working against Cain.
I don’t believe there IS an “unRomney” this time, nopardons.
I don’t know that any of them has a “silver bullet” that will stop Romney from getting the nomination.
I stood back and watched Palin. Nothing came of it.
Cain will either rise or fall. I’m still patiently watching.
Santorum, Bachmann, Gingrich, Paul... I don’t see that they have a chance.
In the meantime, I think they drive the debate. That’s what I’m paying attention to. It’s not voting day, yet.
As I watch all of the movements in the media and the televised debates, all I’m thinking is... each of them is interacting with the others. And I’m learning who these people are and whether they’re worth my vote. I’m still willing to be patient.
And that's the danger of risky advertising, even if it was a video sent to supporters, not aired or promoted. This thread is a great study in how that works. Some people like it, some don't. This by itself won't make his admirers quit him, or his detractors like him. But it generates conversation and may get a few people clicking around his website. For the low cost of production it's probably been a net gain.
I know that Obama used FB and TWITTER, etc. last time around; however, that was in conjunction with a lot of other stuff.
How this will work "for" Cain, I don't know. I am not any kind of "expert" in this matter and don't claim to be one.
I remember growing up as a young teen and declaring my independence from the establishment by smoking a cigarette on school grounds.
Fast forward into adulthood, and I now find myself once again rebelling against an establishment of RINOS and Big Government who are forcefully trying to control me and you.
However, lighting up a smoke today symbolizes that it is now time for all of us to be John Wayne American heroes with a cigarette dangling from our lips and to fight fiercely for the freedoms that the establishment wants to take away from us.
As they say in the military, “”Smoke ‘em if You Got ‘em” because the “The Smoking Lamp is Now Lit”.
Your sincerity really touches my heart. Maybe I should reconsider....
That's why every little jot and tittle matters.
You mean the little things like how to spell "trees"?
LOL!
TF - I’m not even sure it WAS an ad. It was sent to supporters by email with a direct link to the video, with a note by Block.
It does not show up on Cain’s advertising channel on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/user/thehermancain#p/u
I think its funny, and it kind of fits Block, but I’m not going to read too much into it as a “campaign strategy”. For all I know, their server was hacked - that has been happening a LOT lately.
The only thing that will stop Romney is for enough people to go out and support, work for and vote for a conservative in the primaries. People sitting on the sidelines or not engaged will not be a factor in stopping Romney.
No candidate can stop Romney or Obama, only the people can.
Think of it as a laid back jam session before sitting down to cut an album. Or a pencil sketch drawn on the back of an envelop to help you develop a plan for a sculpture.
These video spots are cheap and easy to make, and they will help Cain flesh out how he can best show his individuality and character.
Of course, you are welcome to dislike him. But when I look at Mr Cain, I see a good, smart man that loves his country and is skillfully assembling a campaign literally from the ground up.
You have a strange idea about breaking the rules here and though I didn't report your previous ones, I'll take this now to the highest source.
You have personally attacked me, for no reason, threatened to stalk me, and when I used a perfectly good word, called it "FAGGOTY LANGUAGE", with the implicit implication that I am an homosexual, just because you are unfamiliar with the word codswallop.
You have yet to make a valid or substansive point, vis-a-vis the topic of this thread, hijacking it for your own personal agenda.
Damn!
I gave up smoking late summer between grade six and seven. I was a Marlboro Ma.....kid then.
Adds like this make ya wanna take it up again and be ...cool.
OK, time for poll.
If you smoked, what brand would you smoke?
Me? Probably Marlboro, the red carton.
Is this what you meant, stalker, by what you threatened to do? If so, it's not going to help you any.
I like Ron Paul, but that’s a good ad. I have no idea if that’s going to make anyone vote for him, but I enjoyed it. And the comments on youtube are classic, although about 2/3ds dislike it.
Oh, geez... you have no touch for a conversational post, do you? I feel like I’m being lectured about the rudimentary workings of campaigning, the primaries and the purpose of voting in America.
How pleasant.
