New Herman Cain ad: The smoking man
Hot Air ^ | 10/24/11 | Allahpundit

Posted on 10/24/2011 6:44:35 PM PDT by Nachum

Lots of buzz about this among political junkies on Twitter tonight, mostly of the so-bad-it’s-good variety. Is the image of this guy taking a soothing drag on camera after 40 seconds of ad-tastic exertion really that strange and transgressive? Cain’s campaign is all about unapologetic populist authenticity, and there’s nothing more unapologetically, authentically populist than defiantly lighting one up when the mood strikes, politesse be damned. As the man says, “We’ve run a campaign like nobody’s ever seen.” If you’ve got a problem with casual smoking during presidential spots, well, that only proves what an uptight establishment RINO you really are.

In the next spot, Block should have a smoke in one hand and a can of Schlitz in the other. And as the camera pulls back, there’s Cain next to him, eating a slice of Godfather’s and giving a big thumbs-up.

I think it’s not an ad - it’s a video meant to rally the volunteers/paid staff who are working for his campaign.

Then you won’t vote for him at all in that case. If you need a reason to vote for the only Conservative in the race, then that is on you. Frankly, it doesn’t matter. So, who are you supporting?

You "grow up"!

I am an undecided !

I hate Romney, wouldn't vote for Paul with a gun to my head, don't think much of Perry who is only running because his wife wants to be First Lady, and don't care for the rest of the field.

I want someone to convince me that I should vote for them and to do so for a reason I can accept. Thus far......it's NOT happening.

Was listening to political pundit John Batchelor when his guest brought up the ad. Batchelor’s head just about exploded over the smoking.

How can anyone not see the cigarette is one giant middle finger to the PC crowd?

I don't "troll" Cain or any other threads.

You have no power to get me to stop posting, so don't even go there. LOL

It’s very early days and even with the now crazy moved up primaries...............yes, we’ll see about it all, in the coming months.

I’m stepping back for a second and wondering something outloud.

Santorum is a wreck. We know this. But, if he wants to spend all of his time and his money living in Iowa, visiting every last voter in the state, do we really care?

Should we really care that Cain spent his money on this ad? He liked it. Okay, we can argue about whether or not it is effective. But, does it really matter?

If he has little money to spend and chooses to spend it this way, I have no problem with that. It’s not like he has the funds to advertise on the networks.

The ad will speak to those who find it and like it. Others will never see it or dislike it.

Does it really change the big picture for the voter or not? Either you like him, or you don’t. I think that is what he’s saying with this ad.

I LOVE IT!!!!!! Why shouldn’t Americans feel free to smoke a cigarette whenever we damn well please? I’m a non-smoker by choice but could care less if others smoke. I am sick and tired of every nuance of our lives being micro-managed by government and PC lunatics. Turns out most of what these leftist do-gooders impose on us turns out to be wrong.

EGGS ARE BAD! 20+ years we avoid egss. Turns out they’re good for us.

BUTTER IS BAD - USE MARGARINE!! - Turns out butter is good and margarine is toxic, probably the leading cause of our Alzheimers epidemic.

FAT IS BAD - PASTA’S GOOD!! Now we learn animal fats are actually healthful and carbs are the leading cause of our obesity epidemic ever since this craze was perpetuated on us in the 70’s.

Smoke ‘em if you’ve got ‘em.

GO CAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or it could say “I need something so people stop asking me about abortion, which we shouldn’t even be talking about. Hey, maybe I can get them talking about smoking instead!!”

That's GREAT; yet, just how big is Cain's "fired up" base?

And I never claimed that that was bad.....just that they would have been just as fired up without this thing, which had to have cost something, which Cain can ill afford to shell out for, at this time.

So now Cain is "the only Conservative running,is he?

I'm an undecided and yes, I do need a valid REASON/s to vote for someone in the primaries.

And every vote matters! You know that the Dems will vote in the open states, negating conservative voters' votes.

Brilliant ad. The age group that guy represents are the ones really peeved at Obama and the state of the country. The smoking emphasizes that they’re not politically correct. Brilliant.

Yes, so many subtleties...

* How many guys his age you know out of work? I know many. No one wants to pay them and they have tons of experience. Obama is breaking their spirit on purpose.
* The Smoking? goes right after Moochelle for going after our french fries while denoting her husband's hypocracy and his appetites.

It is so subtley anti-PC yet in your face....

Get your dang hands off my French Fries Moochelle!!!

I’m sick unto death of the damned nanny staters and this ad does less than NOTHING about that. It isn’t what the video is about at all; the smoking is gratuitous and puerile.

You asserted that undecided smokers would love this thing and would rush to be Cain supporters. I quickly disabused of that notion.

You disabused me of nothing, and you have proven nothing...I did not assert that every undecided smoker who saw the ad would rush to support Cain.

You're a lazy thinker.

Effective. I was not thinking about Herman Cain tonight and now I am.

The message is simple. And that message is that “we are different” -— “we are not the same”.
