Sarkozy: Jewish State a 'Silly' Idea

French president Nicolas Sarkozy squarely blames Israel for stalled talks and says the Jewish state's national identity is "silly."

According to the oft-controversial French magazine Le Canard Enchaîne, President Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the idea of a Jewish state is "silly."

"It is silly to talk about a Jewish state," Sarkozy said in reference to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's assertion no true peace could be made until officials in Ramallah accepted Israel's essential Jewish identity.

"It would be like saying that this table is Catholic," he added. "There are two million Arabs in Israel."

Sarkozy also placed sole blame for failed negotiations between Israel and PA officials on Netanyahu's shoulders.

I read the Canard Enchaine regularly in the 80s for a number of years. It is a French equivalent of The Onion.

The author seems to be blissfully unaware of that.

Satire, by definition is mostly silly fiction delivered with a straight face. Someone has seriously overreacted.

According to Sarkozy, the fact that there are two million non-Jew citizens in Israel. How many non-Catholic citizens are there in the Vatican ?

Which points to what I think Israel should do to achieve peace with the Palestinians. Simply put: carve off a tiny slice of land that is most defensible from the Israel side, and forcibly deport all Palestinians to their new country. Give them nothing they want. No access to Jurusalem. No access to any part of the land Israel won by force of arms and still holds by force of arms. No monetary support. Just ignore them except for killing any invaders that try to cross the new border.

Looks to me like Sarko aimed his comments for external consumption—France’s Mediterranean partners, mostly Muslim and Arab in the scheme of things. France has oil interests in Libya and is Lebanon’s principal European sponsor. France has vast economic interests from Morocco to Iran. What are ya gonna do? France is France, and Sarko has been a better friend and ally to the US and Israel than anyone before him since the days before de Gaulle, who ruptured France’s close alliance with both countries.

Of course in Sarkozy's case he's simply pandering, as politicians are inclined to do. It's a forgone conclusion that if France had a dwindling 1% Muslim population and a growing 10% Jewish population he would be saying exactly the opposite.

Le Canard Enchainé is a French Left wing satirical weekly, similar to The Onion.
I have not been able to find the actual French article anywhere.
I find it hard to believe that a leader as diplomatically and politically astute as Sarko, would make such statements.
That being said, I would appreciate clarification from Élysée & Quai d’Orsay (equivalent of our State Department) as well as access to the original article.
