Hoyer: Republicans would see country ‘fail’ to defeat Obama's reelection bid By Mike Lillis - 09/20/11 01:31 PM ET

Republicans would rather see the country collapse than President Obama succeed, the second-ranking House Democrat charged Tuesday.

Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.), the Democratic whip, said the GOP's near-blanket opposition to Obama's policy proposals is evidence that many Republicans have adopted the sentiment — articulated most clearly by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — that their top priority is making Obama a one-term president.

"The leader in the Senate said his principal objective is to defeat Barack Obama, and therefore — and this is important — what follows is that America needs to fail over the next 14 months," Hoyer told reporters at the Capitol.

"Because if America succeeds, if jobs are created, if the economy starts growing, then some would believe that it would be to the political benefit of Barack Obama and the Democrats.

"For those folks, apparently partisanship has been promoted over cooperation or progress," Hoyer added.

Last October, McConnell raised eyebrows when he said his chief goal as Republican leader is not job creation, deficit reduction or strengthening the struggling housing market, but creating a political environment in which a Republican would win the White House next November.

"The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president," McConnell told National Journal.

The remark drew criticism even from some Republicans who accused McConnell and the GOP of "sabotaging" Congress to make it appear dysfunctional in the eyes of voters.

"By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner," Mike Lofgren, who served 16 years as a GOP aide to the House and Senate Budget committees before retiring in June, wrote this month in an online essay condemning the Republican tactics.

"Evidently Senator McConnell hates Obama more than he loves his country."

Last year, McConnell drew similar scrutiny when he helped kill a deficit-reduction bill, a proposal he'd previously characterized as the “best way to address the [budget] crisis,” after Obama endorsed it.

Hoyer on Tuesday took Republicans to task for demanding, as part of their recently issued continuing resolution, that emergency funding for natural disaster aid be offset by cuts to another program in the budget.

"Eight times under [President] George [W.] Bush, we responded to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, other disasters, fires, and we did so by emergency funding," Hoyer said. "The Republicans supported President Bush's request for that, [and] we think they ought to support President Obama's request for that."

Hoyer also went after Republicans for running up trillions of dollars in debt when they controlled Congress and the White House but suddenly becoming fiscal hawks since the Democrats took over. The Democratic whip suggested the current downturn is a hangover from GOP’s policies under Bush.

"Notwithstanding the fact that the economic policy was totally controlled by Republicans in the first ... eight years of the decade, at the end of their economic program over which they had total control, we are faced with the deepest recession since the Great Depression," Hoyer said.

Still, despite all his criticisms of Republicans, Hoyer said he remains optimistic that the two parties can forge an agreement this fall on sweeping legislation to create jobs and rein in deficit spending.

"We are still at a point where we can reach compromise," Hoyer said.

Republicans opposing Obama’s politically motivated “Son of Stimulus,” whether or not any of it would work, and it’s doubtful it would bring more than temporary relief at best, know that if 0bummer were to be re-elected he would be unrestrained in pursuing his anti-business, anti-free enterprise,pro-socialist, anti=capitalist, pro Muslim, and anti Israel policies. And that could well bring chages that could never be undone. As it is we’ll be very lucky to undo the damage the anointed one has done thus far.

Someone needs to stand up and ask the dems -

you want more spending to “stimulate” the economy and get it going again, right?

Name a dollar amount that is needed, and how much the economy will be growing and within what time frame will it do so.

If you don’t know these answers, then you don’t know that your spending plan will do any good, because all the money spent so far hasn’t done anything but put us further in debt.

Hoyer is like a clinger that just won’t drop. We want to get rid of him ,but his afro friends in PG and Charles County love those entitlements and Affirmative action jobs.

One thing we know for sure Obama is trying to destroy our country and our way of life, If he succeeds we all lose.

Do I want to see Obama fail? I have been watching him fail for the last two years now, so has Hoyer. Is Hoyer mentally ill? Is he blind? Obama’s Middle name should be fail.He hasn’t done anything right since he was sworn in——even that was a fail as he had to do it again.

Damned right I want to rid America of Obama, and Hoyer too. They are leading us to destruction. If they succeed we are done as a country.

By the way Hoyer has never held a real job. he has sucked off the Government teat since he got out of college. It’s been quite Lucrative for him too. Ever wonder how a man making as little money as Hoyer from the Government can be a rich man?

If that comment drew criticism from other republicans, then they need to change to democrat.

I agree with it. We can’t get to step B before we do step A. Obama will destroy this country.

America will not fail.

The central government might fail, which may not be a bad thing, but the states will endure and the people will not descend into anarchy. Not gonna happen.

In fact, if civil unrest erupts and becomes widespread, the people will maintain order in their own way. It won’t be pretty but it won’t be the end of America. Far from it.

It’s time for turnabout to be fair play.

It’s time for our media voices and our politicians to all get the talking points lined up. They should be screaming, “HOW DARE THE DEMOCRATS QUESTION OUR PATRIOTISM?!?”

Because that is what is happening every single day and we just let it slide. We obviously do not want this country to fail, we want it to succeed and prosper and we happen to believe that the road to that is 180 degrees opposite of the vision of the Democrat Party.

We are the party of American Success! Not them. Say it loud. Say what we ARE so people hear it.

The failure of Hoyer’s logic is that DumBO’s success is the country’s failure. If ZerO wanted to succeed, he would adopt the Tea Party agenda.
