Va. inmate sues after gruesome tries at sex change
Associated Press ^ | June 7, 2011 | Dena Potter

Crouched in her cell, Ophelia De'lonta hoped three green disposable razors from the prison commissary would give her what the Virginia Department of Corrections will not — a sex change.

It had been several years since she had felt the urges, but she had been fighting them for weeks. But like numerous other times, she failed to get rid of what she calls "that thing" between her legs, the last evidence she was born a male.

Months after the October castration attempt, De'lonta filed a federal lawsuit Friday claiming the state has failed its duty to provide adequate medical care because it won't give her the operation. She says the surgery is needed to treat her gender identity disorder, a mental illness in which people believe they were born the wrong gender.

If she wins, De'lonta would be the nation's first inmate to receive a state-funded sex change operation. Similar lawsuits have failed in a handful of other states, and lawmakers in some states are trying to ban the use of taxpayer money for the operations.

If she loses, she says she will continue to try self-surgery — acknowledging another attempt could kill her.

[Snip]

Years ago she legally changed her name. Ophelia was chosen for the Shakespearean woman who died for love; De'lonta because it was the last name of a slain friend; middle name Azriel for the angel who helps one cross over.

De'lonta first tried to cut herself when she was 12. By 17, she was robbing banks with the hopes of getting enough money to have a sex change operation. By 18, she was in prison, sentenced to more than 70 years for robbery, drugs, weapons and other charges.

The reporter referring to this bank robber as “she” is like a reporter referring to a schizophrenic with multiple personalities as “they”. The pronoun reinforces the mental illness. I may be going out on a limb here, but I prefer the idea of bringing a sick person closer to reality instead of reinforcing any and all delusions.

Prison sentences should be at hard labor actually producing something useful.

Sitting around doing nothing useful except becoming a fatso is as ridiculous as this story.

Okay. This isn't difficult:

This is a mental illness. These people believe that through cutting with sharp instruments, they can achieve emotional happiness and stability. It is a lie. They need help, but that help does not involve scalpels.

Anyone who calls this man a "she", anyone who supports "transgendered" policies, anyone who pretends that this is a viable view of the Self, is engaging in cruel and unusual punishment. The whole transgendered myth is the second greatest evil (right behind abortion) in this country today.

This person is MENTALLY UNSTABLE as I believe all trans-genders are.

“They need help, but that help does not involve scalpels.”

Agreed. I feel very bad for such people, however robbing banks is still NOT OK.

Somewhere along the line we decided nobody is crazy. That was an inaccurate conclusion.

As long as it contributes to the continual destruction of American culture, it's just fine to the left.

Sigh. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I can't even see private health insurance paying for a voluntary surgery like a sex change, let alone the state paying for a sex change for a convicted felon.

Let me be even more reactionary: if someone in prison wants to mutilate himself like this fellow is supposed to have done, just let him do it and live with the consequences. Saves the taxpayers the further cost of housing and feeding the scumbag.

Me, too. Unfortunately, while treating a person for mental illness is the right thing to do, it requires a lot of work over the course of a long period of time, success may be long in coming, and the fees for service may not be all that high for the amount of time invested. OTOH, mutilating a person can be done in a relatively short period of time and results in a huge payoff for the amount of time invested. Plus, if the person decides to have the genital mutilation surgically repaired (as I read that a percentage of people suffering from "transgenderism" end up doing), there is another huge payoff.

In the case of many types of mental illness, I am not sure how much of the illness is a result of odd ideas that the person somehow picked up along the way, or of actual brain disorders. In the former case, therapy should be of great benefit.

What I see going on here is that this guy has some serious issues. But instead of facing the issues directly, he blames all his problems on being a guy (a form of displacement). A good therapist could help him come to the realization that mutilation is not going to solve his problems—facing down the problems and coming up with constructive solutions is actually the approach he needs to adopt.

Giving them the surgery doesn't mean they won't still need the therapy.

There are some things one cannot change. One can change ones dress, diet, nose, religion, etc. But one cannot change ones sex, race, age. One can only pretend to change them. But that does not make it so.

Of course not. They may blame their problems on their gender, but getting mutilated doesn't equip them to deal with their problems. Only therapy can do that.
